Rebecca Sumers Obituary

Rebecca Ann Sumers, age 59, passed away at her home in Washington D.C., on May 24th, 2006. She was the daughter of Russell and Arvena Sumers, who taught school in Altoona, IA for many years. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, June 24th, 2006 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer, Iowa. Interment will follow at the Millersburg Cemetery. A lunch will follow at the Millersburg United Methodist Church. A native Iowan, Rebecca attended Southeast Polk High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Drake University in Des Moines. There she pledged a sorority and managed "Bull Dog Tales." Later, she earned several graduate credits at Drake's extension university located in Venice, Italy. Her career as an interior designer took her from Leonard's Furniture in San Antonio, TX, to many fine establishments on the east coast, among them Master Craft Interiors in Maryland and Colony House in Virginia. She worked the high fashion industry in New York, NY and Dallas, TX. In Atlanta, GA, she designed animated cartoons for television. Her skills attracted many clients and friends. While living in Texas, she was married to and divorced from, Scott Burton. Her sense of humor, her style, her interest in family history, and her love of warm climates will be remembered by all. Rebecca's memory is honored by a sister, Alinda, a brother, Nathan, four nieces, a nephew; several great nieces and nephews; as well as a large family, many of whom live in mid and southern Iowa.
