Richard Schneider Obituary

November 19, 1946 - April 25, 2016
Capt. Richard C. Schneider, USAF Ret, 69, died unexpectedly on Monday, April 25, 2016, at University Hospital as the result of injuries sustained in an earlier car accident. He was born on November 19, 1946 to Robert P. and Claudine R. (Johnson) Schneider in Niles, Michigan.

Dick graduated from Niles High School and later enlisted in the United States Air Force where he specialized in Aircraft Munitions Maintenance and Explosive Ordnance Disposal. He continued his education in the USAF achieving his bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering and completing officer's training. He served several tours of duty, both stateside and overseas, earning the U.S. Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters. Captain Schneider was honorably retired in November 1994, from the former Kelly Air Force Base, now part of Joint Base San Antonio, after serving 20 years on active duty.

In retirement Dick remained in San Antonio where he continued to serve the Department of Defense and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a consultant for Explosive Ordnance Disposal. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, skiing, hunting, and fishing. He was very talented at various woodworking projects in his workshop and one of his greatest passions was working in his garage, restoring and maintaining his Ford Mustangs and Chevrolet El Caminos.

Dick was formerly married to Sandra Robbins of Niles, MI. Together they had 3 daughters. He married Sandra Schwenke in 1987 at MacDill AFB, in Tampa, FL, and they resided in San Antonio until the time of his death. Other survivors include his daughters: Karena Schneider, of Seattle, WA; Pamela Schneider of Chicago, IL; and Michele Weir of Wheaton, IL; his siblings: Robert Schneider of San Francisco, CA; Penny (& David) Smith of Brownsburg, IN; and Roger (& Kelley) Schneider of Goshen, IN; a grandson: Logan Blume; along with several nieces and nephews.

Previous visitation and funeral services were held in Niles, Michigan followed by interment with Full Military Honors by the United States Air Force Color Guard and the Fort Custer Veteran Volunteers assisting at Fort Custer National Cemetery near Augusta, MI.
