Robert Koenig Obituary

April 24, 1934 - August 9, 2016
Robert (Bob) Osborne Koenig, Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather passed away peacefully August 9, 2016, age 82. Born April 24, 1934 to Eugene William and Alice Junita (Osborne) Koenig in San Antonio, Texas. With his boyhood friends, Henry, Bobby, LeRoy and Evelyn Dukes they roamed the San Antonio River around Blue Star, hunting snakes, lizards, squirrels, and birds... "We climbed over and under Box Cars hunting pigeons on the railroad tracks ..." His love of hunting, fishing and wildlife continued his entire life. Stories about family and friends who gathered to visit, play cards, camp or fish brought many laughs. Family importance started the genealogy research to include an unforgettable trip to the Chickamauga Battlefield looking for a monument. Research unveiled many colorful family characters (not unexpected!). Bob graduated Brackenridge High in 1952 became a catholic, married Gladys Fronzia Lyssy June 26, 1954 and had children Robert Jerry and Shirley Alice. Bob worked many jobs to include tagging boxcars for Southern Pacific, which didn't go so well. "The Trains were at least 50 to 60 cars long and I had to jump on the train with all the tags in one hand and a lantern in the other at night. ... as I was running out to jump on the Train I lost all the tags and the boxcars had to be hunted down to tag them... I got frustrated and quit that job." Fortunately Bob's career was in civil service. Hired at Brooks AFB, he was a Warehouseman, followed by a GS-3 in Base Procurement and finally a Small Business Purchase Officer purchasing supplies for the Space Program, then retired as a GM-13 in 1989. Bob obtained an Associate from San Antonio College, BASS from Texas State University and MS from Webster University. But most dear to his heart was his volunteer work for the Texas Youth Hunting Program under the Texas Wildlife Assoc/TPWD from 1998 to 2010. He became a "Huntmaster", responsible for arranging and taking youth to various ranches to hunt. He truly believed the saying "SHARE THE HERITAGE, Take a kid hunting!" Bob belonged to Chapter 1594 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). He was president from 1999 to 2012 and most recently served as Treasurer. Bob participated in the Highland Hills Neighborhood Association. Bob was preceded in death by parents Eugene and Alice, son Robert Jerry and brother Jack Koenig. He is survived by wife Gladys, daughter Shirley (Tim Baney) and the joy of his life, granddaughter Staci (fiancée Michael Kocsis); brother Charles Koenig (Laurel), sister-in-law Virginia Koenig; numerous nieces and nephews. Loving niece Cynthia Koenig and nephew Eugene Koenig (Dottie). Baney and Truss families; neighbor Annette Ivy. Bob will be missed by Lexi (affectionately called Dog-Dog). A special thank you to Norton Shectman, PA-C who took exceptional care of Bob for years. Dad thought of you as a friend as well as his healthcare professional.
