Seems a little late for me to be throwing in my two-bit worth. Ron broke me into radio after my firing at the daily newspaper. He called me "Soul." He was one of those guys you would want with you in a foxhole. They are few and far between.

Ron was a loving caring Uncle. He was Uncle Fred to me. He was my namesake as I was named after him. We have many memories of growing up near him. He took us to the beach and to pick widflowers at Easter. We would call him at the radio station and he would dedicate songs to us. He was best man at my wedding. My condolences to the family. I'm sorry Sheryl. I will miss him greatly. In loving memory, Bobbye Lee

I was a "young", musician wannabe when I first met Ron. It was during the KEXL FM radio days. They were a big supporter of "local" talent and we did many shows in association with KEXL. Ron was solid, sharp, funny and a gentleman. He would treat a "nobody" (like me) with the same respect that he would show a Willie Nelson or Leon Russell. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. We have lost one of the truly "great ones". My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones.

I had the extreme pleasure of working with Ron at KBUC during the late 70s and 80s. Ron was such a pro and would do anything to help people. He is one of the greatest voice over talents I have ever heard in my life. Rest in Peace my friend.

When I worked with Ron at KEXL I remember one time being with Ron and Willie Nelson backstage at a Willie concert. We had a lot of fun and I was blown away by how much of a fixture Ron was in the Texas music scene. The other thing I remember was Ron's big red Cadillac convertible, that brings back a lot of good memories. That was back in the 70's.
He was a good man and a good friend and I will miss him.

I was also one of the lucky ones that knew "The Ron Houston" I was the receptionist at KBUC back in the 80's. He and I hit it off right away. We both being animal lovers. He would always say hello to my mom and dad when he was on the air. They would get the biggest kick out of that. I will miss that distinct voice. Cheryl, you will be in my prayers.

I had the privilege of working with Ron at KTSA back in the late 60's. I was 18 years old, and he was THE Ron Houston. Even then, he was kind to me, and helped me acclimate to my new life as a born again Texan! A great guy, a great pro, and an early beacon in my career to how the big boys do it! Rest in peace, Ron!!

My heart is breaking as I write this ... Dear, sweet Ron Houston ... Freddie Lee Jones ... you will be so dearly missed, my man.

First, my heart-felt condolences to Ron's love, Sheryl, his entire family and so, so many friends. It is truly a sad day knowing he is no longer with us.

I remember meeting Ron my first day at KEXL at the Menger Hotel in the Spring of '72. Ron was doing the morning show in the control room that overlooked Alamo Plaza. It was a beautiful, clear morning and there was Ron, with his coffee cup and ever-present pipe, spinning records and sweet-talking the morning commuters.

As we talked, I inadvertantely laid the log down on the 'playing' turntable and to my horror, heard the needle skip and scratch across the album. But, Ron just laughed and told me that I had just been 'initiated' into the radio business and that everyone did it at least once. His kindness and understanding was palpable and right then I knew I loved the man. We would often go to the Menger Diner when he got off the air for a cup of coffee while he smoked his pipe and told me radio stories. At the ripe age of 21, I was exhilarated by the prospect of being a part of a business that was so exciting and 'happening.' We became fast friends and I had the privilege of working (and partying) with Ron for many years.

If I was on the radio today, I would play "Good Night" by the Beatles.

Good night Ron.

Few of us knew Ron--sweet, funny, talented Ron--by both his names: Ron Houston, his raido name and Fred Lee Jones, his name at birth. By whatever name you called him, he was always a friend, a hard working and precise radio and voice talent, and a good man. Ron and I go back to the early 70s. He always had a big bear hug for his friends. Over the years I have thought of him, his resonate voice and his gentle view of the world. When he died, I thought my heart had a sad little hole in it. I quickly realized that my heart was actually bigger and sweeter for having had Ron in my life. My deepest sympathy to his wife, family and the community who knew and loved him.

I had the pleasure of working with Ron at Texas Radio KENS 1160, back in the mid 90's. "The Ledge" was always very kind and supportive of me as a young upstart in the biz. Thanks for everything Ron. Thoughts and prayers to the family. God bless.

October 14, 2009

Don't even know where to start, Ron, was a big part of my family's life for so long. We always called him "The Lege" for the legend he was even so long ago. He worked with Steve Coffman through all the Texas Radio Formats and stations. He believed in the music... We pray for his family and will hear his voice forever. Vicky Coffman and family

Ron Houston. We loved to hear him talk. You can't say his name and not hear his voice. When he spoke, he made us happy . Ron didn't have to act cool. Ron was cool. And what a Pro! I remember watching him cue up records, doing a live intro, switch to a pre recorded promo, read the news, find the next record, talk to me , and with a wink of control, turn it all over to "Commander Cody".We miss you Ron.
We'll tell our favorite Ron Houston stories, wishing we had your voice to tell them.

Ron was a great friend to both my husband and I. He enjoyed life and
was a blessing in our lives. My prayers go out to his family. He will be missed by so many.

How could you not love Ron Houston? He was such a great guy! He'd come by KKYX and KONO from time to time and he was like a magnet; people just flocked to him. He was a radio legend but didn't act like it. He was blessed with a great voice and a wonderful personality. The animals were blessed for having such a caring advocate and we were blessed for knowing and working with him. My sincere condolences to his family--Ron will be very missed by all his friends at Cox Radio.

I can't even estimate the number of voice-overs Ron did over decades of service with Matson Multi Media.

He was the consummate professional - an example for those just starting out...he was the one to admire and emulate.

I will miss our 'voice of Matson's videos' greatly. Why do the good guys have to leave so soon?

Ron Houston's Spirit lives in every voice-over that still resonates through South Texas. He touched my heart, and I know he is now with his Maker, at Peace.
Lord, thank You for the person of Ron Houston; he was Your Trusted Servant who did all he could do to make the most of each and every day he was given.
The Lord giveth; The Lord taketh; bless the Name of The Lord.

It is interesting to read others' comments about Ron's kindness to man and animal alike. We call him the Voice of Blanco. Just as San Antonians listen to his advertising at HEB, we Blanconians hear him in our local Super S, at the Fire Department Fish Fry and other local fundraisers and at city dedications. Ron Houston was a very integral part of Blanco's charm. We have been blessed to experience his warmth and compassion, and miss him already now that he's gone from this life. ~Christina M. I am a long time fanboy of Ron Houston. To me Ron was like the Guy Clark of radio personalities. A central Texas figure to be proud of. I'll tell you how cool I always thought he was, when I read "Lonesome Dove" my mental image was Ron as one of the characters. In the TV movie they used Robert Duvall and I thought he was a damn fine Ron Houston stand in. KEXL was the heart and soul of San Antonio music in the early 70's, we all listened to him as we got our first exposure to album rock. Before that I knew him from KTSA and after that he was the coolest thing about KBUC. If you think about it, he was a part of the radio stations that were Puro San Antonio at their most important stages. And of course he was the voice on a million radio and TV commercials for small and large San Antonio businesses we all grew up with. I don't know that it bothered him one way or another but being a fan of his I do wish more people really understood his contribution and it is this: an area has it's local flavor and Ron was a part of ours. During the years I was at United Audio Recording I would visit with him all the time, for a long stretch at least once every week when he came in to voice over the H.E.B. spots. His talent was huge but bigger than that he was just a good guy. I mean a really good guy. I was always thrilled to see him. I think everybody felt that way; if Ron walked in the door the level of pleasantness and the quality of the conversation would improve immediately. It was an honor to know him and I thank him for his contribution to the San Antonio experience. There won't ever be another like him.

Ron was a wonderful, caring guy, and a fabulous DJ and I knew him during his employment with KBUC RADIO (on the Eastside of San Antonio), owned by the Tom Turner Family. I was Tom Turner, Sr.'s personal secretary, and anytime a hungry, stray dog appeared at our office, (which was quite often!) Mr. Turner ALWAYS, said "go ask Ron if he can take care of another "hungry" animal, which he always did. Ron was the best! and will be missed by many. Rest in peace, my friend.
