Rosetta Leonard Obituary

SISTER ROSETTA LEONARD, SHSp
September 6, 2025
Sister Rosetta Leonard died peacefully at her home, Convent of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate on Saturday, September 6, 2025. Her baptismal name was "Mary" but when she entered the Novitiate her name was changed to "Rosetta", a name she grew to embody for the next 75 years.

She was born on January 19, 1932, in County Galway, Ireland, the daughter of Patrick and Ellen Leonard. As a child, she bloomed in a land of fresh earth and fragrant flowers. In 1948 she came to the hotter and dryer land of Texas where her bloom had to become heartier. During her 75 years of religious life, Sister Rosetta served as a primary school teacher and principal in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi and ministered briefly in Zambia. She administered at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center, welcoming hundreds of retreatants to the Motherhouse over the years. She finished her ministry years with Sisters Care at the Village. After living a life in full bloom (with the occasional thorn!), Rosetta retired and spent her days grateful to God and to all the people whose lives had touched hers.

Sister Rosetta is mourned by her brother, Tom Leonard and her sister, Lena Fitzmaurice, her nieces and nephews and their families, her religious community and her friends.
