Ruth Luna Obituary

May 4, 1948 - December 6, 2017
Ruth Luna Luna, born May 4, 1948 passed into God's loving arms on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at 9:00pm. When it snowed the following day her family and friends knew she was smiling and laughing in God's arms.

While Christmas was her favorite season, she knew each day was a gift. She made the most of every day teaching, exercising and bringing joy to her family, friends and students.

She was married to Reuben Luna for 40 happy years. They traveled extensively visiting Canada, Mexico, Russia, England, Norway, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Greece, Ukraine, Romania and Turkey. They were usually together except when Reuben was playing softball while Ruthie was shopping. She loved to shop for bargains and she always looked beautiful in all her clothes.

Ruth was 69 and preceded in death by her father E. G. Luna and mother Eva Garza Luna in 1965 and 1976 respectively. She is survived by her sister Ester Kline (Peter) and her brother, Rev. E.G. Luna (Mary) and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Ruth graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1966, and Trinity University in 1969.

Ruth always had two jobs. She was an elementary school teacher for 32 years at all grade levels. Her last 15 years were spent teaching the gifted and talented In Northside Independent School District.

During the second part of the day, Ruth taught English as a Second Language in the 70's to recent immigrants. Then in the late 70's she taught at Barbizon Modeling School instructing young ladies in the arts of fashion makeup, stylish dressing and graceful modeling.

She taught aerobic dancing from the late 70's on into the new millennium. Upon her retirement she taught aerobics and yoga at the collegiate level. She began at Northwest Vista Junior College and then at Trinity University.

Ruth taught subjects that improved body, mind and soul. Her students loved her and she spent hours preparing music for aerobic dance, water aerobics and meditative Yoga.

As she entered her 60's, she began teaching at independent senior living facilities. One of her favorites was The Meadows where she taught Laughter Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Chair Yoga.

She remained beautiful, happy and full of laughter and never missed lunch with her siblings after they all retired. She leaves a big hole in her family's hearts and in those of her many friends.

When informed by her doctors that she should make her end of life decisions, she told her husband and siblings she was ready. She wanted to be cremated and have a small private funeral with only immediate family attending. Her brother the Rev. E.G. Luna Jr would lead the prayers. At her request a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

We are lucky to have had Ruth in our lives for 69 years. We will always cherish her.

I still can't believe she has left us. She truly was the most giving, kindest, sweetest and loving person I have ever known. I thought I new Ruthie pretty well but after reading her life story here I really didn't know her at all other than I knew I loved her and was always happy to be with her in whatever project we were working on for school. I know she is happy and smiling down on all of us but she is and will be greatly missed until we meet again. May she always rest in peace. Janice

Mrs. Luna was my GT teacher from 1993-1996. I was also thinking about what an amazing experience it was to be in her classroom. She treated us as young adults and taught us many life lessons such as accountability, integrity and responsibility early on. She made thinking out of the box the norm and gave us many challenges that I now realize had a purpose that would shape us and accompany us into our adult lives (a true master). I will never forget her huge heart and am grateful to have had her guidance in my life.

I am so sad to find this out just now. Ruthie was the sweetest, kindest, loving and most giving person I knew. She was always smiling. I know she is right up in heaven smiling down on all of us. Has there already been a celebration of her life? May she rest in peace. Janice Granieri Hobbs class of 1966....xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

Mrs. Luna was my GT teacher from 1991-1996. I was recently thinking about her and what an influence she had had on my education. Being in her classroom are some of my best elementary school memories. Perhaps the adventures she took us on in her classroom contributed to my own desire to travel and that I now live in Norway. So sorry to hear of her passing. She was a beautiful person. Blessings.

Mrs. Luna Luna was my gifted and talented teacher at Oak Hills Terrace elementary from 1994-1999. She was the first teacher I ever felt fully respected by. She called all of us Mr. or Ms. and saw us as full people, capable of achieving great things even in elementary school. I remember how magnetic she was, how safe and free we felt in her classroom, and how she pushed us with love to fulfill our first steps of potential. The last time I saw her was at the funeral of the mother of a dear friend and classmate. We were in high school at the time and were so surprised and grateful to see her at the service. Her heart was huge. So sorry to hear she passed so soon, but grateful to have had her as a teacher <3

Ruth and I met while both teaching activity classes as NVC. She knew I also taught at Trinity University and told me she'd love to teach at her Alma mater. Upon hearing of Ruth's passing I can't help but remember her special contagious smile and her ever so precious way of being so genuine. I recently have tried contacting Ruth just to touch base and have a chat. It wasn't like her not to respond so my heart goes out to her husband and dear friends and family. Bless her heart~

Dearest Reuben, Ester and EG: I was sad to hear of Ruthie's passing. I am a cousin, daughter of Pete Garza who was Eva's brother. My sisters (Rose and Liz) and cousins of ours are very interested in attending the Celebration of Life event when it is planned. Sad to see her go, but know that she is in the heavenly places with other family members. I hope to see you all soon. Take care and be comforted by His presence.

I was fortunate to have been friends with Ruthie from Woodlawn Elementary, Mann Jr. High, and Jefferson High School. She was an integral part of many high school reunions----always with that beautiful smile. She was truly one of the sweetest ladies I have ever known. Reuben, my deepest condolences to you and the entire family. Heaven has indeed welcomed a sweet, beautiful angel.

I remember Ruthie having a different Christmas sweater for every day in December. Every day with Ruthie was a great day!
