STANLEY ROSENBERG Obituary

Stanley David Rosenberg, leading real estate attorney, visionary business advisor, investor, avid football fan, and philanthropist, died peacefully on May 21, 2021. He was 89. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sandra Joy Rosenberg (nee Sugarman); along with their three daughters, Susan Sandoloski, Carol Baskin, and Jill Rosenthal, and their spouses, Lee Sandoloski, Steve Baskin, and Bobby Rosenthal; his seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren (who lovingly called him Peeps), Allison Kaplan (Zach Kaplan), Sean Sandoloski (Maggie Sandoloski), Sam Baskin, Chelsea Baskin, Justin Rosenthal, Blake Rosenthal, Aubrey Rosenthal, Dylan Kaplan, Charlotte Kaplan, Oliver Sandoloski, and Caroline Sandoloski. He additionally survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Carol Sugarman, their children, Stanley's nieces and nephews, Michael, Amy (Dan Weingart), and Andy Sugarman. Stanley is also survived by his nephew, Stephen Soble and niece, Laurin Harris (Roy Harris). Stanley was preceded in death by his sister, Miriam Soble, as well as his parents, Abe and Bella Rosenberg.

Stanley was born July 18, 1931, to Abe Rosenberg and Bella Pearl of blessed memory. He attended Texas Military Institute, graduating in 1949, where he was a star student, a ROTC officer, and played football, making the all-city team as a Little Giant, playing as an offensive lineman. In 1951, he met his wife, Sandra (née Sugarman), with whom he attended the University of Texas at Austin. When Sandra went to Austin as a Majorette in the band, Stanley invited her out for a date. A year later into dating, she made her famous butterscotch pie, and the rest was history. A four-year courtship later, Sandra and Stanley were married.

After graduating from TMI, Stanley attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he majored in Business, was the Prior for Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity, was on the freshman football team, active in the Undergraduate Business Council, and was involved in highly sought-after organizations like the Friar Society and Texas Cowboys. Stanley was known as a charismatic and social man but was extremely hard working; often spending hours pouring over materials in silent study rooms. After Stanley graduated early, with honors, he continued at the University of Texas at Austin, receiving his LLB from the University of Texas School of Law in 1955, where he continued to showcase his tenacity, as a member of the Law Review and a member of the highly esteemed, Chancellors. Stanley loved his time at the University of Texas, continuing to be a fervent University of Texas football fan, and serving in many varied capacities including: The Advisory Counsel of the UT Business School, UTHSC Development Board, President's Law Review Foundation, and Chancellor's Counsel; a member of the Littlefield Society, and Presidents Association; named one of the 125 Extraordinary Exes, and as President of the UT Dad's Association. Stanley Rosenberg has also supported the University of Texas at Austin financially throughout his life through the creation of the Stanley D. and Sandra Rosenberg Centennial Professorship in Property Law in 1983, the Stanley D. and Sandra J. Rosenberg Centennial Professorship in Real Estate for the McCombs Business School in 1983, the Stanley and Sandra Rosenberg Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Law in 1989, the Stanley and Sandra Rosenberg Family Laboratories at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2007, and the Stanley and Sandra Rosenberg Endowed Excellence Fund in Business and Law in 2010.

After graduating from law school, Stanley left his beloved University of Texas to serve in the Air Force as a JAG officer, providing legal services in the Air Force. After completing his tour of duty, he returned to San Antonio to begin his career as a real estate and business attorney. Stanley founded three successful law firms (Oppenheimer, Rosenberg & Kelleher, Inc. at its inception in 1971, Rosenberg, Tuggey, Agather, Rosenthal & Rodriguez in 1990, and Rosenthal, Pauerstein, Sandoloski, Agather, LLP. ), and was involved in the creation of several large businesses in San Antonio including: Eye Care Centers of America, Inc., which is now Visionworks, and Home Centers of America, now part of K-Mart, and Southwest Airlines. He was supported during his professional career by his indispensable assistant, Terry Pozza, who worked by his side for decades.

One of Stanley's biggest points of pride was his negotiation of the purchase of the New Orleans Saints by Tom Benson, where he remained counsel and advisor to Tom Benson and the New Orleans Saints for decades, later participating in the purchase of New Orleans Hornets by Tom Benson. With Benson, Stanley acted as part-owner of the Saints. Stanley, and his wife Sandra cherished their time cheering on the Saints at games across the country from the 1980s (a time when the Saints were jokingly called the "Aints") to the height of their success in the 2010s. Stanley was such an integral part of the team that he was awarded his very own personalized Super Bowl ring when the Saints won the Super Bowl in 2010.

Throughout his successful career, Stanley Rosenberg continued to contribute to causes that were close to his heart. In addition to supporting the University of Texas at Austin throughout his life, Stanley and Sandra Rosenberg supported another institution close to Stanley's heart - the University of Incarnate Word, the alma mater of his beloved older sister, Miriam Soble. In addition to the creation of the Rosenberg Sky Room, named for his charitable donations, in 2010, Stanley merged his passions for education, real estate, optic health, and philanthropy and assisted The University of Incarnate Word in founding the Rosenberg School of Optometry. To this day, the Rosenberg School of Optometry remains only one of two accredited Optometry schools in Texas. Beyond his support of higher education, Stanley was committed to dedicating his time to organizations he cared about; he served as Committee Chairman–State Bar of Texas Task Force on Title Companies (1984 to 1990); Director of University of Incarnate Word, Director of National Western Art Foundation; Director of Lone Star Capital Bank (2003 to 2016); and Member of Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission.

Beyond his professional successes and philanthropic contributions, Stanley was known for his great sense of humor, his magnetic personality, and charismatic storytelling. He was exceedingly proud of his grandkids and never missed an opportunity to brag about all of his grandchildren. Stanley loved a chance to spend time with his entire family; from trips around the world, to fun family dinners, to trips to the Ranch, or shopping with his family. Stanley loved to take trips whenever he could to go to his Ranch in Bandera to drive along the Medina River and look at the water; but he loved those drives even more when he got to bring his family along. To his family, he will be fondly remembered for his commanding presence, his memorable speeches and songs, his love of peppermint ice cream (but hatred of cheese), and, most importantly, his continued generosity.

He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on. The family would like to thank the love and care provided by Monica Quijano, Albert Vega, Ceasar Carrillo, Karen Kosub, April O'Hern, and the staff at the Forum.

Stanley had an important impact on my career early on when I was 26. He was a remarkable man, and I was fortunate to have had him as a partner, and to have his friendship and support over these many years. A legendary personality that will be missed.
