Susan Fox Obituary

Susan Acosta Fox
November 27, 1952 - June 13, 2024
Susan Acosta Fox died on June 13, 2024, in Mission, Texas where she had lived for the last year. Her friends in McAllen, Pharr and nearby Edinburg knew her as Susie Fox.
Born as Susan Annette Fox (she later legally changed her name to just Susan Fox) in Winston- Salem, NC, on November 27, 1952. She was born on the same day and month, but different years, as her first cousins, Stephen Lowder and Lyn Lillich.
Susan grew up in Winston-Salem and graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School. She eventually moved to San Antonio, Texas, where she graduated from the University of Texas in San Antonio and obtained her teaching certificate. She taught kindergarten at Colonies North Elementary School from 1889 to 2011. She loved her students and fellow teachers. If you were having a bad day, Susan would quickly make you forget your troubles. Upon retirement, she lived in San Antonio until she moved to McAllen where she lived in Heritage Village, an independent living facility which she loved. When they discontinued many amenities, including food service, she moved to Brook Ridge Retirement Community in Pharr, Texas and then to the Bridges at Mission. Her health declined due to Parkinson's Disease, several mini-strokes and increasing dementia.
Susan was a vivacious, outgoing person who never met a stranger. When at a party, people would wonder if she was acting like she had had too much to drink, but she rarely drank. She never needed alcohol to lubricate her social skills. Her favorite hobbies were scrabble, bingo, backgammon, laughter and games.
Susan loved pets and throughout her life, she would always have a dog by her side. Not until her move into Heritage Village did she forego her friendship with dogs. She formed many friendships wherever she went with an infectious smile and laugh. Susie will be missed by all of us. The family would like to give a special thanks to Rosa Estrada who took wonderful care of Susan during her declining health alongside Hospice.
Susan is survived by her sister, Jan Fox-Cain (Bobby), her brother Woody Fox (Debbie) and her son, Taylor Acosta.
A private service will be held by family in Winston-Salem where her ashes will be spread. In lieu of flowers, friends and family are encouraged to send a memorial to the The Class of '68 Memorial Scholarship c/o The Winston-Salem Foundation, 751 West Fourth St., St. 200, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 (rjrhs68scholarship.com) or to the charity of your choice.

Susan will be missed by so many, but especially her RJR special 5 friends. We so wish she had stayed in WS so we could have helped her when she needed us the most.

My deepest sympathy to Susan's family. I will miss her even though we had not been able to keep in touch the last few years. She was a wonderful friend and I have wonderful memories of our trip to New York. May God bless and comfort you during this time.

To the world, Susan did not deserve this. She was so fun loving and full of life. We had a good life together and all the memories for 21 years. I can now understand how one's mind can change over time and you have to follow your desire. Susan touched many children's life, as does any teacher will. I know Susan will be greatly missed by all and my heart felt prayers go out to ALL .
Peace, Michael A. Acosta
