Sylvia Barrera Obituary
Sylvia Ann LaFargue Barrera, 64, completed her journey to Heaven on February 25, 2014 after a 17 month battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), a form of leukemia. She was born to the late Antonio Yanez LaFargue and the late Maria de la Luz Jimenez LaFargue on September 9, 1949 in San Antonio, TX. On May 30, 1970 she was married to her loving and adoring husband Charlie Barrera. For the last 35 years, they have lived in Conroe, TX, where they raised their two beautiful children.
Upon graduating Magna Cum Laude from Sam Houston State University with a degree in Education, Sylvia went on to inspire young children as a bilingual kindergarten teacher at Neil Armstrong Elementary School in Conroe, TX. She retired after 20 years of service. Over the past 10 years she was able to achieve her greatest accomplishment of assisting her children with raising five amazing grandchildren. Her example and love will be with them for the rest of their lives.
She is preceded in death by her parents Antonio Yanez LaFargue and Maria de la Luz Jimenez LaFargue and her brother Anthony (Tony) LaFargue. Sylvia leaves behind her husband Charlie Barrera; son David Barrera and his wife Juli; daughter Vanessa Barrera Leonard and her husband John; grandchildren Madgalene Rose Barrera, Mackenzie Jude Leonard, Lucy Grace Barrera, Jack Ryan Anthony Leonard, and Benjamin Michael Barrera; sister Mary Dolores Palomera and her husband Tim; sister-in-law Josephine LaFargue; mother-in-law Vera Barrera; brothers-in-law Hugo Barrera and Mike Barr, as well as countless nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation and Rosary will be held at the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral home in Willis, TX on March 3 from 6-8 PM, and the funeral service will be March 4 at 1 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Conroe, TX. Sylvia's burial service will be conducted at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX on March 5 at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to St Jude Children's Research Hospital, P. O. Box 1000, Dept 142, Memphis, TN 38148. Please reference Sylvia's name, Tribute account # 35469791. This was Sylvia's favorite charity. Condolences may be left at www.shmfh.com.

I met Sylvia at Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio. She was a very caring, kind and lovely woman. My heart is very heavy at this time and lift up her family and loved ones in prayer.
