Thomas John Carruthers

1946 - 2017

Thomas John Carruthers went to meet his Jesus April 4 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and "Dad" to many young people. His is loved by many and will be missed by all.
Following high school, Tom served in the US Air Force in Guam, Oklahoma and Louisiana for 5 years. After separating from the Air Force, Tom worked in several occupations and was out of work for only one month his entire life. He was respected for his strong work ethic. He and his wife Bea established T. J.'s Hamburgers 44 years ago. Their hamburgers have been named "best burger" in San Antonio many times and have received 2 "Blue Plate" awards. During this time, he also established Carruthers Materials as a second business.
He enjoyed fishing and teaching his children and grandchildren to fish. He took time to support his children and grandchildren in their athletic endeavors and loved watching them excel. He was an adult co-ed coach for a team he organized and a girls' softball team coach.
Tom is survived by his wife and best friend Bea Saunders Carruthers; his children James Robert Carruthers (Glynda), Bea Carruthers, Thomas John Carruthers (Diana); his grandchildren T. J. Carruthers (Amber), Cissy Carruthers, Sabra Carruthers, Autumn Carruthers, Tyler Carruthers, Thomas Carruthers, Samantha Carruthers, Trey Bell, Jake Bell, Daniel Grover and
Gary Swanson; his great-grandchildren Brandi Carruthers, Noah Carruthers, Paige Carruthers, Meredith Carruthers and Madilynn Carruthers; his brothers George Carruthers (Ellen) and Phil Carruthers; his sister-in-law Dorothy Evans; niece Rhonda Mc Neil (Matthew) and nephew Cyrus Evans (Heather).
Tom was preceded in death by his daughter Snow Carruthers and his parents George Raymond and Mildred Moore Carruthers.
