Thomas Cantrell Douglass, 89, of College Station, passed away in San Antonio on April 20, 2009. A graveside service is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. on Thursday at College Station Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled from 11:00 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. with the family present from 11:00 A.M. to 12 noon Thursday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. Mr. Douglass was born in Mart, Texas, on August 29, 1919, the son of Thomas Cantrell Douglass, Sr., and Mattie Epps Douglass. Following graduation from Sam Houston High School in Houston, Texas, he enrolled at Texas Tech University until his education was interrupted by World War II. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served in the European Theater as a chief gunner on a B-24 bomber, earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant prior to discharge from the Air Corps in 1945. In 1946, he returned to Texas Tech University where he met and married Hollis Holt Douglass. He distinguished himself as a fullback on the Red Raider football team and still holds football records at the University. Mr. Douglass graduated with a degree in industrial engineering in 1946. The couple lived in Lubbock until 1969 where Mr. Douglass managed Hertz Rental Car Agency. In 1969, Mr. Douglass moved to San Antonio, Texas, where he owned Toyota of San Antonio until 1985. In 1997, he moved to College Station where he was associated with Douglass Nissan and where he lived the remainder of his life. Mr. Douglass was a proud veteran, a loving father and husband, a man of great character, and one who left the world better than he found it. Mr. Douglass is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, three brothers, and his wife of 52 years, Hollis Douglass. He is survived by one daughter, Darcus Weppner and husband Paul, of San Antonio, three sons, Thomas Cantrell Douglass III, and wife Pam of San Antonio, Noble Holt Douglass, and wife Rose of Bryan, and David Richard Douglass, and wife Telma, of San Antonio. He is also survived by granddaughters Farra Jenkins of Bryan and Hollis Douglass of San Antonio, and by grandsons Noble Holt Douglass, II, and wife Brandy of College Station, Levi Douglass and wife April of Bryan, Britton Cantrell Douglass of Houston, Holt Carle of College Station, and Thomas Cantrell Douglass, IV of San Antonio, and by great-grandchildren Lindsey and Lauren Douglass, Adam King, and Aden Douglass, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dear Douglass Family:

It is with deepest sadness that I extend my condolences to you on the loss of your beloved.

As Chair of the Senate Committee on Veteran Affairs and Military Installations, I am sincerely thankful for his valiant service and dedication to our great country.

May the love and the wonderful memories you shared with him help you when you need it most. He will never be forgotten, and your family will be remembered in my prayers.
