Walter F. Huebner, renowned astrophysicist and lifelong traveler, passed away peacefully at his home in Norman, Oklahoma, on June 1, 2021, at the age of 93, surrounded by his family. He was born in New York City, on February 22, 1928, to Margaretha (Koch) and Richard Huebner.
Walter received his PhD in Physics from Yale University. After graduating, he worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1957-1987, in various capacities from staff scientist to group leader. In 1987, he moved to San Antonio, Texas, and worked at South West Research Institute as an institute scientist until 2018.
Walter was known not only for his invaluable scientific work, but also for his kind, gentle and generous nature. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was loved by all who knew him.

I worked for many years with Walter Huebner. He was always a kind and generous man and a great scientist. I have been asked to present some memories of him for the World Federation of Scientists in conjunction with their Erice, Sicily meetings. This will occur on Monday morning, August 23, 2021, where this year the meetings are being held virtually. If a family member would like to join in, please contact me (at SwRI). I've attached a photograph of Walter at the 2010 Erice meeting; he is in the center, I'm far right. He is missed.
