Thomas Richard Willard, 83, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2025.
Born on June 10, 1942, in Medford, Oregon, to Herman and Anne Willard, Tom was raised in Hollister, California, graduating from Hollister High School in 1960 as a standout track and field star.
Tom served proudly in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1962, an experience that shaped his discipline and work ethic.
On April 27, 1963, he married the love of his life, Margaret "Peggy" Horcajo, beginning a 62-year marriage built on love, devotion, and family.
Tom's professional life began as a skilled cement finisher and over time he established his contracting business, Willard and Sons in Concord, California. Later, he transitioned to the swimming pool industry, moving with his family to Stockton, California in 1975. Tom became a territory manager for Swan Pools in 1980, eventually purchasing the company in 1991. Under his leadership, the company thrived, and he took pride in helping families create beautiful backyard spaces. He continued to work well into his eighties, retiring only recently.
A devoted father, Tom was especially proud of his three children and even more so, his four grandsons. As a longtime Raiders fan, he rarely missed a game and enjoyed watching alongside family and friends. He loved the companionship of his pets and spending time with loved ones.
Perhaps most significant was Tom's 41 years of sobriety, which he considered one of his greatest personal achievements. As an active and dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous, he mentored countless individuals, offering guidance, encouragement, and hope. In 1986, he founded the annual Caples Lake "Great Escape" AA retreat, which has continued for 39 years and remains a cherished tradition for many.
Tom is survived by his wife Peggy; children: Thomas (Bonnie) Willard, Michael (Kelli) Willard, and Barbara (Tim) Gildea; grandchildren: Finnian Willard, Aidan Willard, Ryan (Alyssa) Willard, and Sean Gildea; and siblings: Martha Jane Bennett and Terry Lee Willard.
A celebration of life will be held at the Willard residence in Stockton, California on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 12 p.m. Friends and family are invited to gather, share stories, and honor his memory.
