Who didn't love Gus Chavez? He was a huge presence on campus for years and yearsa good portion of the 38 years I worked at SDSU. Gus actually CARED. He stood up for the disenfranchised and addressed injustices, large and small. He was a sage with lots of heartrespected and loved by all who knew him. When he retired, it was hard to imagine any mortal filling his shoes. His social justice legacy ripples out into the world and into the future. Rest in peace, Gus. You were a force for good and a wonder.

Gus and I shared experiences as directors in Student Affairs, he in EOP and I in Housing and Residential Life, and we worked together for those EOP students who lived in residence halls. We had a mutually supportive professional relationship with warm personal and social justice beliefs and practices. He made an impressive mark on the university. I regret I missed his celebration of life yesterday because of personal illness. Nonetheless, he will remain in heart with affection and good memories. My sincere condolences to his wife and family.

I was lucky to have a chance to chat with Gus for a few minutes in April. He was in great spirits even as he was dealing with a challenging illness. I'm very sorry to hear of his passing and send my deepest sympathies to Enriqueta and to his family at this time.

With Gus, SDSUs EOP experienced its golden age. A great administrator, supporter of students, and activist. He has never been equaled. Goodbye and many thanks,
