Barbara Blackmun Obituary
June 29, 1928 - July 6, 2018
Lexington, Kentucky – Barbara Blackmun was an advocate for African cultural heritage and was an authority on the Kingdom of Benin's art history. She received her Ph.D. from UCLA and was Professor Emerita at San Diego Mesa College teaching there from 1971 to 2010. A founding member of the African Arts Council of the San Diego Museum of Art, she also established the Mesa College Foundation, which sponsors African Art displays. Both organizations welcome donations in her honor. In 2014, Dr. Blackmun moved from La Mesa to Kentucky to be with family. Survivors include her children Monica Blackmun Visoná, William Blackmun and Karl Blackmun.
A memorial will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at 10:30 am on September 10th, where she will rest beside her husband, Rupert Beall Blackmun.
