Charles Scott Obituary

Scott, Charles "Red" LA JOLLA -- Of the hundreds and hundreds of awards and honors bestowed upon "Red" Scott during his lifetime, he valued most receiving the 1984 Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans. Other recipients of the prestigious award that year were, Sam Walton, Ed McMahon, and George Foreman. In 2002, the Association further honored Red with its highest recognition by presenting him with The Norman Vincent Peale Award. The Association said of Red, at that time, "his life, his steadfast faith in the opportunities that exist because of our nation's free enterprise system and his positive outlook exemplify the American dream". Red Scott passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at his La Jolla home surrounded by family after an eight-year battle with prostate cancer. He lived his life following the advice of his beloved grandmother, Eliza Jane Patton, who often said to him, "He with 1000 friends has not one single one to spare". Born in Paris, Texas during the Depression, he first visited La Jolla in 1960, fell in love with the community and spent the rest of his life there. In La Jolla, he was president of Intermark, Inc, a Fortune 500 company, and later became CEO of Fuqua Industries, a multi-billion-dollar NYSE Company, based in Atlanta, from which he retired in 1995. He was also owner and chairman of The Executive Committee of Florida; aka Vistage Florida. A graduate of the University of Texas, Scott was a former chairman of The Young Presidents Organization. He chaired the highly successful $100 Million "Fund for Greatness" for Scripps Memorial Hospital and was chairman of the San Diego Council of Boy Scouts of America. Scott was a founding director of the Washington, D.C. based American Business Conference, America's one hundred fastest growth businesses. He was also past president of the Greater San Diego Sports Association, Chairman of the San Diego Padres' Citizen Advisory Committee and along with Jack Murphy, conceived and gave life to the Holiday Bowl. He served on the boards of numerous civic and charitable organizations as well as more than 20 publicly held companies. He was always available to anyone who sought his advice, often inviting him or her to his office in La Jolla and greeting them with a hearty handshake typical of the Texas hospitality, which he carried with him throughout his life. Thousands of young people came to count him as their mentor and role model. His wife of 48 years Kathy, his son Patrick, daughter in law Jeanie, son Kelly, daughter in law Melissa, five grandchildren, an older brother James, sister-in-law Agnes of Macon, Georgia and numerous nieces and nephews survive him. There will be a private family Church service. The family suggests donations be made to The San Diego Chapter of the Salvation Army and the San Diego Zoo.

Kathy, I am Nancy Jane's grand daughter in TX. I just found out today about Charles. We kept in touch every few months via email. When he didn't answer my last email, I just thought he was very busy with everything he did. I sent him another email last night and received an email from Agnes this morning informing me. I am heart broken. There will never be another heart as big. You and your family are in my prayers and thoughts always.

Lucky. That's how Red would tell you he had been. But those who had the chance to be around him for just a little while KNEW full well it was because of hard work.
It was an honor and blessing for me to have the opportunity to be part of a group from his junior college alma mater, Paris (TX) Junior College, to spend the afternoon with him reflecting on his life, success, and most importantly, his friendships. It wasn't about Red, it was about all whom he had been aided through the years. As a true sign of his appreciation of others, he made a gift to the college to honor his successful run for president of the Student Government Association and the high school and junior college friend whom he roomed with at the University of Texas. That's Red. And his e-mails of thanks and encouragement will always be missed.

I was Mr. Scott's caddie at the Vintage from 2005 - 2009. He encouraged me to finish my education and move on. He said that education was the ticket to my freedom. I actually found an email from him from last May in response to my email to him:

Matt: Great to hear from you ! Glad to hear you are doing well. I knew it
all along from the day we first met. You are a winner !! As we speak we
are at Vintage playing the 32nd edition of the Red Scott La Jolla-Vintage Shoot Out. Same game, same guys, just older and most now playing from the Green Tees. I am now 84!

Regards. Red Scott

You will be missed Mr. Scott. My condolences to the Scott family. Thank you for your generosity during my time at the Vintage.

By sheer coincidence I found out that Red is no longer with us. Like all who have met him, he had a special place in my heart. As a Swedish co-worker to his son Kelly during his stay in the late seventies in Stockholm, Sweden, I got to meet with Kathy and Red several times and was always generously taken care of in their beautiful home in La Jolla where I have spent many wonderful times, including Christmas and Thanksgiving. When visiting their son in Stockholm we had the possibility to invite Kathy and Red to our home, letting them have the experience of a typical Swedish cray-fish party!
Like everybode else, my life was touched by Red's wisdom, generosity and true interest in people. Many are the private and business advices and thoughts he shared with me which I have kept over the years. He was also masterly introducing me to American football which I have had a keen interest in since then.

My thoughts are with Kathy and of course especially with my friend Kelly at this time of loss. You are so lucky to have had such a wonderful and special husband and father!

Red Scott, the great leader will be missed by all that knew him. He is in a peaceful place. Red gave so much to his family and friends. May the Scott family find peace in their hearts; from knowing how much he loved them. I miss the morning calls, with my mentor, friend and partner. – Chip Webster

Red was a great leader and true gentleman who was a major force in my life and career.

As much as he loved golf, Red must be tickled pink that a guy named Scott won the Masters last Sunday.

I never personally knew "Red" Scott, men in my family did. A very impressive person which this community will miss. But, I did know Kathy. We were classmates in Darlington, Indiana. There were 26 in our class and some of my fondest memories as a child were with Kathy. We both had December birthdays and I'll never forget her put-put and cat "Motor" and the slumber party where I had to go home. Kathy you found a jewel in Dallas in this man. Please accept my deepest sympathy in your great loss. Love & blessings, ddd

My friend Red, aka "Max" and me aka "Agent 99" at LJCC: Sept. 21st, 2013

Christy Moeller Visbal · Former resident of La Jolla, Present Spanish Teacher / Golf Coach at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School

Red, was not only a brilliantly honorable and charitable businessman, but a wonderful, loving father, grandfather, husband to beautiful Kathy, and a genuine friend to anyone who had an open mind, and heart. Loved by both of my parents, James E. Moeller and Mary Moeller (deceased) Red was like a father, friend and mentor to me. He was that man you could always count on to listen, to ask the right questions, and to provide straight-out-down-to-earth advice with good sense, at any level. While I lovingly nicknamed him "Max" for his consistent manner of asking questions like the character Maxwell Smart once did in the TV show, his reputation, as a visionary leader who respectfully served the good will of others, shall always preceed him. Our world is a better place because of the treasured footprints left by Red for others to follow...

Red: There are no words to express the values you've given in everyone you've touched. You entered our lives at a time you were needed. We will be forever greatful. Thought's from John Wooden, Head Basketball Coach, Emeritus, UCLA express my feelings. "Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation. Character is what you really are; reputation is merely what you are perceived to be." Thank you Boss.
