Christine Stanley Obituary

STANLEY, CHRISTINE Christine Stanley, owner, operator, and founder of Pinezanita Trailer Ranch died December 21, 2005 at the age of 77. Christine was born November 22, 1928 in Valiant, OK, oldest of 4 children, to LC and Jody Slaton. She moved from Oklahoma to San Diego, CA in 1940. For a short period of time she lived with her grandmother in Pasadena, CA where she went to school and worked as a hostess and waitress. Christine moved to Texas for a short time before returning to San Diego where she volunteered with the USO and worked for a catering company that provided services for the troops leaving for Korea. In 1952, she married Alfred Stanley, Jr., a United States Navy Brig Warden at Port Hueneme, CA. Christine and Alfred Stanley, Jr. started A. Stanley Plumbing in San Diego in 1958. They bought property in Julian, moved there soon after, and continued the plumbing business in the Julian area. She worked along side her husband digging trenches, carrying pipe and hot lead, crawling under houses, installing water and sewer lines for residential and commercial customers, all this in addition to raising 5 children. In 1964, Christine and a partner opened Pinezanita Gift Shop on her property in Julian. They gathered manzanita roots and branches, had them sandblasted, and made floral decorations, many of which were sold for decorating new office buildings in San Diego. Christine not only worked alongside her husband in the plumbing business, but also commuted and worked in San Diego with her mother as a painting contractor. Christine's husband, Alfred Stanley Jr. died in February of 1968. Faced with a daunting task of raising 5 children, she put into motion a business idea that they had for a campground. Christine's father, mother, father in-law and children started to work and Pinezanita Campground was born the summer of 1968, later to be known as Pinezanita Trailer Ranch. Christine's accomplishments: Julian High School board member, Julian Grange member, Julian Chamber of Commerce, Julian Bed and Breakfast Guild, and was instrumental in the first ambulance service in Julian for the back country. Christine is survived by her brother Whalen Slaton of Yuma, AZ; daughter, Betty Morgan; sons: Richard Stanley, Tom Stanley, Jim Stanley of Julian, and Fred Stanley of Encinitas; and four grandchildren: Jeff Burns, Justin Stanley, Brandon Stanley, and Shannon Stanley. Christine touched the lives of so many with her genuine spirit and zest for life. She perservered in the face of adversity to create and share her "little piece of heaven" known as Pinezanita. Her love, compassion, and generosity has touched us all. Always a spare moment to help those in need and placing the needs of others before her own. She instilled inspiration to all of her countless friends and acquaintances, especially to her daughter, her sons, and their families. For all you have done, you are in our hearts forever. I remember Christine as a warm, inviting person with a pretty smile when I walked into the Pinezanita store. We tent camped at Pinezanita often in the 90s and so enjoyed the pond and catching catfish! She was a wonderful lady.

It’s hard to know exactly what to say about such a wonderful and accomplished woman as Christine Stanley. We were fortunate to have the wonderful opportunity to get to know Christine when my sister Michelle married Christine’s son, James Stanley in 1989. Christine was such a genuine person and so giving of herself to her family and friends. Christine truly created a slice of heaven in her park known as Pinezanita in Julian. She was loved so very much and will be greatly missed.

It was our good fortune to stumble upon Pinezanita when looking for a place to go with our new trailer. What we had planned as a weekend visit turned into a 'permanent' spot for us. We enjoyed MANY years, met many friends, (some of whom we are still in contact with) over the years we were residents in 'the little piece of heaven.

Chris ran a great park more like a family place and what a worker she was! It was always a pleasure to get back to Pinezanita after a hard weeks work and spend time amongst friends and get to chat with Chris.

Although we are no longer in California or own a trailer we often speak of the happy times we spent in Julian and we always have our memories.

Our condolences to the family. Your mom was a great LADY!

I was saddened to read of Christine's passing. For many years my husband and I would bring my mother, Helen Cook, her little dog, and our trailer, to Pinezanita. Mother would stay 2 or 3 weeks and throughly enjoy herself.

Helen visited Pinezanita yearly into her late nineties and I know that she was very fond of Christine. Christine always kept an eye on her and I knew she would contact us if there were any problems. I frequently saw Christine in her truclk or on the tractor & was amazed at all the things she did around the park. My mother passed away last year and I know she would want me to express her condolences as well as our own to Christine's family. She was a very nice and thoughtful person.

My deepest sympathy to all of you. Chris was very special to me for so many years. It all started when the Stanley's were our neighbor in Lakeside. Chris babysat me for quite awhile. I was always so impressed with her abilities and her genuine kindness. I used ot go up to Cuyamaca with her all the time when they first bought the property. Thank you for the awesome memories of my childhood Chris, and to Betty, Richard, Tom, Jim, & Fred. You were so blessed to have such a wonderful mother. May the peace of God consume you and comfort you all. Love, Patti

Christine Stanley was such a wonderful woman having visted her Pinezanita Trailer Park over the years since 1993. Friendly, warm and gracious she was one I admired greatly. May she rest in peace and my heartfelt condolences to the family.
