Darwin Dapper Obituary

DAPPER, DARWIN V. Darwin Sr., passed away peacefully at his home Monday evening while watching a football game. He was 94, and in those years he lived his life fully, with vigor, compassion, generosity, humor, modesty, and above all with honor. He was a true gentleman and a friend to all who knew him. Darwin was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, the youngest of 13. After high school, he attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis/St. Paul where he met the love of his life, Annette. They married in 1937, and had three children Darwin, Jr., Diane, and Terry. In 1941, Darwin came out to California. After WWII, he founded the Service Station Supply Company, which later became The Dapper Tire Company, which he grew from a single small San Diego company to one of the 10 largest Goodyear dealers in the country. He was beloved by his employees and admired by his competitors. Upon retirement, he was named "Chairman of the Board Emeritus" and maintained an office in the San Diego headquarters until 2003. Always eager to provide enjoyment to others, Darwin was quick to share his love of sports and his prize season tickets to San Diego's pro-sport franchises. Later in life, he enjoyed returning to his boyhood state of South Dakota to hunt with his pals. His enthusiasm for and interest in life took him and Annette around the world many times. Darwin is survived by his wife of 67 years, Annette, his three children, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Words cannot express how much he will be missed. His family and friends take great comfort in the privilege of having known one of the finest men of his time and all time. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 11 a.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church in Del Cerro. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to Nazareth House, 6333 Rancho Mission Road, SD, CA 92108. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com
