Coach Macky: I played for you for 4 years at Valhalla High School (1989-1993) and they remain some of the absolute best years of my life. Although I am just now seeing that you passed, my memories are vibrant and live on. I too severed my ACL and recall you carrying me off the field. I went onto play college soccer and want to thank you for your tough love. I'm now a high school English teacher and college professor in Central Washington, mother of a 16-year-old, and frequently think of you when I give my son sports advice. We had a lot of fun! One of my all time favorite memories is when we would all yell "Macky!" and then unanimously hit the deck. With simultaneous annoyance and joy you'd retort "Quit Skylarking Girls! We've got work to do.)

Dr. Mackey, so many memories of Valhalla High School´s first girls soccer team. You were such a phenomenal coach and mentor. I was 17, senior year and tore my ACL. I still remember you carrying me off the field. Now 40 years later I am working as a Physical Therapist, still practicing. I work at a San Diego outpatient trauma hospital. Treating a lot of ACL injuries along with burns and multi-trauma. You taught me compassion along with a strong work ethic. Those are skills I use everyday with my patients. I miss you, I wish we could have reminisced, laughed and hugged. You were such a strong, encouraging, and loving coach. I bet you were a great Grand Father. I will never forget you. By the way I barely passed my statistics class in undergraduate. Peace to your family, your legacy lives on.

I was saddened reading about our loss of Dr. Macky, whom I remember so fondly from my graduate studies at SDSU. Though I am now retired from 32 years´ teaching introductory statistics for biology and psychology students, I´ll always value the inspiration and insight I gained from taking two applied/multivariate stat classes (for non-mathematicians) from Dr. Macky. His explanations always took the intuitive approach, and he emphasized practical interpretation of analyses, as well as its limits. His sly sense of humor, with occasional references to "The Hitch Hiker´s Guide to the Galaxy", gave a unique and delightful perspective to his beloved subject. In short, he greatly helped me develop my own skills explaining the use of stats in the scientific process. I was honored to learn from a teacher among teachers.

Dave was a great supportive and loving grandfather to his granddaughter Caitlin at her high school swim meets. He was truly a pleasure to know. My condolences to his entire family.

Coach Mackey you changed my life. I will forever be grateful for how you pushed me to be my best, treated me with respect and listened to my opinions, taught me soccer and life lessons and modeled what a good honorable human being looks like. I am forever grateful that you were my coach. I will cherish all the time we spent on the field and the visits at our house with my dad drinking beer and talking soccer. You were one of the most amazing human beings I have ever known and your legacy lives on in so many including the lessons I pass on to my children. Thank you for everything coach.

Doctor Macky was one of my favorite professors at S.D.S.U. in 1979 along with Arine Vallone and Newton Smith. I wrote a 400-line computer program that really impressed Dr. Macky because he said what I did could not be done. I tell that story to this day, as I am doing now. When I read the obituary, I learned what a remarkable man he was. Vaya con Dios ! and my condolences to the entire family.
