David Shaffer Obituary

David W. Shaffer June 20, 1928 - February 14, 2016 San Diego Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Dave began playing clarinet at the age of 10. Music was his lifelong passion. After graduating from Kent State University, he began his career as a school band director in Ohio and in the early 1960's he taught in Orange Glen and Escondido School districts. Teaching music inspired him to invent and eventually manufacture a composite reed that would allow woodwind players the freedom to develop their talent without the distraction of problematic cane reeds. Dave's "Fibracell" reeds have been selling worldwide since 1992.Dave was preceded in death by his son David M. Shaffer an accomplished Musician and Composer. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joyce Shaffer; sister Martha Morse; sisters-in-law, Holly Robertson and Linda Lane; daughter Debby Cassidy; son Paul Shaffer and wife Wendy; step-children: Kevin Smith; Deborah Zampini and husband Jason; and Kimberly Smith; beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren. Thank you for sharing your life with us.A memorial service will be held at The Cove at The Church of Rancho Bernardo, 11838 Bernardo Plaza Court, Suite 101 (Behind the Citibank building) on Saturday, March 12, 2016, at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to: The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation.
