DON TUSCH Obituary

TUSCH, DON R. 1930 to 2009 Longtime San Diego resident and business executive Don R. Tusch died suddenly on November 21, 2009, at age 79, following a dinner with his wife and dear friends. Don Tusch was born on October 21, 1930, in Minneapolis. His family moved west when he was eight, eventually settling for good in San Diego when he was eleven. He graduated from San Diego High School and attended San Diego State University. Don was a member of the National Guard/Army Reserves for 12 years as a young man. After holding a variety of jobs including postal carrier, gas station attendant, and painter at a local boat manufacturer, he discovered his career passion when he built his first home. This led to his developing a construction business that initially focused on custom homes, later expanding to apartments and office buildings. In 1974, he established a property management firm, Tusch-Derbonne Company, that specialized in investor acquisition of apartment complexes in the San Diego and Phoenix areas, and overseeing their management. Don was also a passionate supporter of his community, the Ocean Beach-Point Loma area, and a 50-year member of the Lion's Club, holding a variety of leadership positions. He was an original member of the Kona Kai Club and the San Diego Tennis and Raquet Club, and he recently helped establish the Oasis Church in Ocean Beach. Don was a devoted family man, raising two daughters with his first wife, Grace. He and his second wife, Doris, have been married for 35 years. Don is survived by his wife, Doris; his daughter, Donna Rose, of Portage, Wisconsin, and her partner Mark Wall; his daughter, Susan Rackley, and her husband, Ivy, and their sons Evan and Trevor Brown and Chris and Matt Rackley, and their granddaughter Haylee Rackley. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Gladys Tusch, and by his sister Mary Jane Hurder and her son, Greg. A memorial service to celebrate Don's' life will be held on Sunday, December 6th, at 12:00 noon at the Kona Kai Club at 1551 Shelter Island Drive. Anyone wishing to remember Don with a donation, is encouraged to contact the Oasis Church at 2051 Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, San Diego, 92107, or the Peninsula Lion's Club at 1537 Rosecrans Street, San Diego, 92106.

Don was a successful builder and developer -- but what made him a good man is that he shared his successes with us. I remember many fun times at his Julian Ranch... and his legacy is the fond memories he left us with because of that generosity. My thoughts are with you...

Susan, I remember your dad well from the time we were teenagers and young adults, when we were roommates and your wedding . . .and all my memories are of a very nice dad, who was always welcoming and helpful. I have no current address for you, but want to extend my sympathy to you and your family for the loss of your dad and the boys' grandfather. I know he will be greatly missed.
Blessings to all of you,

I have some fond memories of Don, as he sat infront of me at the SD Charger football games. Getting off to a bad start with him many years ago (by me kicking his seat when I crossed my legs), we finally became charger fan friends, and I will miss his friendly smiles and chats over Sunday football games. Blessings to his wife and family. "Rhonda"

Dear Doris,Susan,Donna and family,

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to you today. I will miss Don very much. He was such a kind and generous friend to all of us, but especially my Mom and Dad. Not a week went by that he did not check in with them and then later, after my Dad died, he and Doris always were there for my Mom. Our family is blessed to have known him and to have been touched by his wonderful spirit. My Dad had a nickname for Don, "Black Cloud" because Don was such a realist and smart business man and my Dad was the eternal optimist and risk taker. Together they achieved great things and I know they are enjoying a good laugh right now up in heaven! God bless you all as you go through this difficult time. I will remember Don with love and affection and I will forever hear him say "Hi Kat" whenever we would meet.

Much Love and Sympathy,
Kat Nolan Spongberg

Don Tusch is known as a builder and developer but he built more than wood and concrete structures. He built people and communities. We met when I was a high school kid dating his daughter and we kept our friendship for forty years. During collage there was always a summer job somewhere building something. I now realize that the odd jobs I did became progressively more complicated, teaching me carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, and finish painting skills. I also learned planning, estimating, facility maintenance and quality assurance skills that I continue to use today. I didn’t know it at the time, but he was also teaching me how to learn unknown skills and how best to teach others so they could help themselves. By his example of joining in community activities I learned the satisfaction of participating in, or leading, professional community groups. Over the years when I’ve returned to San Diego for a visit and done various home handyman projects for my family, Don was there with a contact to get the special hardware I needed. It seemed as if his contact community was endless.

With Don’s passing, the world has lost one of its truly nice guys. I suspect that I’m not alone when I say that I’m a better person for having been able to count Don Tusch as having been my friend. And the community he helped build, which I am lucky enough to have had a small role in, will continue to benefit from the values he instilled within us. Thanks Don. You will always be remembered.
