Donald Luster Obituary

Donald Philip Luster April 25, 1933 - January 19, 2019 San Diego Don Luster was born in Gloucester, Mass. An aspiring singer/songwriter, he joined the Army and served in the Korean War where he wrote a song, "The Lonely GI," which Elvis Presley sought the rights to. Refusing the offer, The Don recorded the song himself, hitting the charts in Boston. He later wrote "It's Only Human," intended for friend Frankie Laine; it became the title track of his own album. Don moved to San Diego in 1958 to further his career. After working in various nightclubs, he built and opened The Pink Panther in 1965. Don has operated The Carriage House, The Lost Knight, and with his sons, Peter D's. Don had a big heart, loved the color pink and had an infinite love for animals. Don was a lifelong donor to his favorite charity, St. Jude's Hospital. Don is survived by his wife Patricia, sister Beverly; children Bobby, Peter (Amy), Donna (Daniel) and Karen; grandsons James, Josh, Ryan and Wesley; many nieces, nephews and friends whom will always remember him affectionately. Services will be on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at 11am at St. Catherine Laboure, 4124 Mt. Abraham Ave., San Diego 92111 with celebration to follow.

I'm so sorry to hear of Don's passing. :'(
My father Del Stewart of "Del's Follies" played at the Pink Panther, as well as Peter D's. Don even let me come into Peter D's when I was about 12 years old to watch my Dad perform. (Dad only had visitation every other weekend with me)
I loved when he sang " That's Amore".
Saw him at my Dad's last get together in Alpine, & he sang that with his whole heart and beautiful animation.
You will be missed.
Say Hello to the whole Del's Follies band for me. (Del Stewart, Jerry Gunnels, Carl Larson & Joe Nieves)
We miss all of you.

I was saddened to learn about Don's passing. My husband Joe Nieves & Don were friends for many years.
I think he met Don when he had the Pink Panther & Joe was in a band with Del Stewart. He used to go to
Peter D's often to visit with Don. Last time we saw Don was at my husband's funeral in July. Don was a
wonderful friend to my husband. Mrs. Joseph Nieves
