Donald Meloche Obituary

The Honorable Donald L Meloche, son of Charlotte Marie and Arnold Lambert Meloche was born at Nogales, AZ and passed away Sunday surrounded by his loving family.
Don will be remembered for his generous and kind heart, classic sense of humor, his feisty grin, deep love and commitment to his family, friends and his Country. Don is one of four brothers, all who proudly served in the four branches of service. He is predeceased by his older brother Roland Myles Meloche.
Don served as a 1st Lt. in the United States Marine Corp. for three years during the Korean War. He attended George Washington University law school, then earned his law degree at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In '50s and '60s Don worked as a San Diego Deputy District Attorney and prosecutor. For 19 years he was a partner with the law firm of McDougal, Meloche, Love, Eckis & Murphy. Don cared deeply for people and his clients and was acknowledged for his wit and work ethic and was loved and respected.
In 1987, Don was appointed as a San Diego Superior Court Judge. A strong athlete, avid runner, a pilot for many years. He loved flying! He was known as 'the flying Judge.' Since there was often a shortage of courtrooms, Don would often jump in his WWII Bucker Jungman biplane and fly to the auxiliary court in Ramona.
Don is survived by his wife Charlotte, his friend and former wife Patricia, son Mike and wife Julie, daughter Julie and her son Andrew, Scott and wife Kim and their children Lauren and Ryan, and his brothers Jerry and wife Pollyanna and Al aka "Scoot". Don has numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws and was very proud of his whole family. We are blessed to have known him.
On Sunday…Don flew with the Angels to meet with his Lord and Savior and is now at peace.
Services will be on Monday, May 15, 2023 at 11:00AM at Skyline Church, La Mesa, CA.

I had many trials as a new deputy district attorney in front of Judge Meloche. He was an excellent jurist and cared deeply for public safety and victims. In my 36 year career, he was the best judge for trial I ever appeared in front of. Rest in peace Sir!

Don touched our lives in so many ways. He represented both my mom and dad. My sister Jan worked for him and he performed her son Jason´s wedding ceremony. Sister Jeri also worked for him and he married Jeri and John in the sky above Viejas on 4th of July! We were on a trip to South of France with Don and Char and my in laws and his brother and wife and Jeri and John Hickman.
My picture of Don is a sunny day at the beach when he was 85 and boogie boarding with us! He lived life to the fullest and in the company of his loving wife Char and children and extended family and friends. Missed but not forgotten. Jackie and Bob Metcalf.

While I am sorry to hear of Don´s passing, I am sure that he and Dad have a lot of catching up to do. Their long friendship was an inspiration, as they may not have always seen eye-to-eye, yet their mutual love and concern never wavered.
My family and I send our sincere condolences on your loss.

As a young deputy district attorney, I had the opportunity to meet and try cases against Don Meloche. He was the consumate trial attorney - both very skilled and professional. As a young lawyer, he sort of guided me around the courtroom.
I was later appointed to the bench in 1990, after Don had been appointed. He welcomed me like an old friend and served as a mentor. He was just a wonderful person and friend. He will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to his family. Judge Harry Elias
