Giuseppe Giacalone Obituary

Giuseppe Giacalone October 28, 1931 - March 9, 2018 San Diego Giuseppe Giacalone, 86, passed away at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, to Salvatore Giacalone and Maria Rosaria Quincy, he immigrated to San Diego at the age of 15. Giuseppe met and married the love of his life Angelina Oritano in Little Italy, and they enjoyed 61 happy years together. A loving father to four children, they made their home in Mission Hills. Giuseppe was a commercial tuna fisherman for over 40 years during which time he made many lifelong friendships. He enjoyed camping and traveling in his motorhome with Angie, visiting family and friends in Italy and taking care of his home and income properties, always finding something to build or repair. He also enjoyed having coffee with friends in Little Italy. We will all miss his passion for life, his good nature and his never-ending commitment to family. He was an extraordinary man, a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many. He rarely missed an opportunity to make people smile, especially when he told a story with his strong Italian accent. He wanted to be remembered as a "nice man." Giuseppe is survived by his three children, Maria Castagnola (Louis), Salvatore Giacalone (Carissa), and Angela LoCoco (Nick), seven grandchildren, Joseph Castagnola (Jessica), Peter LoCoco, Josie Dare (Larry), Nicole D'Amato (Pete), Antonina Castagnola, Louis Castagnola, III (Shanel), and Angelina Giacalone, and three great-grandchildren, and stepsister Virginia Marino. Predeceased by his loving wife, Angie, daughter Josie and brother Gaetano. Also predeceased by stepsister Frances Taormina and stepbrother Gaspar Lafata. Viewing March 20, 5:00 p.m. with recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Greenwood Memorial Park and Mortuary. Funeral Service and Interment March 21, 11:00 a.m. at Greenwood Memorial Park and Mortuary, 4300 Imperial Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113 (619) 450-1479. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Giuseppe Giacalone to Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, mailing address, 1629 Columbia Street, San Diego, CA 92101.
