Grace Tsuida

Grace Tsuida, long-time University City resident, passed away peacefully on March 16 at age 96 after battling effects of the COVID virus.
Born in El Cajon to Haru and Kamekichi Kaminaka, Grace attended El Cajon Grammar School and Grossmont High School. After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and Japanese Americans were forced to leave the West Coast, Grace left Grossmont H.S. in the 10th grade.
She and her family were sent to Santa Anita Race Track before being moved to the government's Camp at Poston, Arizona. While at Poston, Grace met Masayoshi Tsuida, a young GI, who was visiting his own family. In 1944, she and Mas got married at Fort Riley, Kansas, before he was sent overseas with the 100/442 RCT.
After the war, Grace and Mas returned to San Diego to raise three children, and later, to help raise four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her family and friends will remember Grace's friendliness, kindness and generosity.
Grace was predeceased by her husband Masayoshi, her siblings Mary Hatashita, Joe and Leo Owashi, and Martha Deguchi, her son Mark and her daughter Nadine Moorin.
She is survived by her son Glenn Tsuida, daughter-in-law Carolyn Tsuida, son-in-law Arnie Moorin, grandchildren Angela Tsuida, Lisa Womack (Billy), Kacie Tsuida and Kalena Tsuida, and great-grandchildren Carina, Dominic and Jaxson Womack.
Grace's ashes will be interred at Cypress View Mausoleum in San Diego.
In lieu of flowers or Koden, a donation may be made to the San Diego Japanese Christian Church.
