Hugh Shearer Obituary
Mr. Shearer died at his home Monday after a prolonged period of ill health. The cause of death was not immediately known.
Mr. Shearer served for many years as president of Jamaica ' s largest trade union, the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union, named after another former Jamaican prime minister, Sir Alexander Bustamante.
He entered politics in 1955 and became a member of parliament soon after.
Mr. Shearer became Jamaica ' s third prime minister in April 1967, after the death of Donald Sangster, who served as prime minister for only two months.
During Mr. Shearer ' s five years in office, he presided over an economy that consistently recorded positive growth. He was replaced as leader of the Jamaica Labour Party by Edward Seaga in 1974, after which he returned to focus on the trade union movement.
Mr. Shearer, born May 18, 1923, in the northern parish of Trelawny, left a wife and eight children.
