James Munce Obituary

James Burney Munce
January 4, 1943 - July 29, 2020
San Diego
On July 29, 2020, James Burney Munce, 77, lost his battle with metastatic prostate cancer. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. James, or "Jim", was born and raised in Southern California. In 1960, he graduated from Phineas Banning High School in Wilmington, CA. He attended the University of Southern California as an undergraduate and graduated from Washington University School of Dentistry in St. Louis, Missouri. In June 1967, he passed the California State Dental Board exam and then entered the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy, he was attached to the First Marine Air Wing in the Republic of South Vietnam and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After leaving the Navy, Jim opened his own dental practice in San Diego. During his 53 years of practicing dentistry, he was an active member of The American and California Dental Associations, the San Diego Dental Society, the Council on Ethics of the San Diego County Dental Society, the Council on Peer Review, and the Board of Directors of the Dental Society. Jim had the honor of being selected several times as one of "San Diego's Top Dentists" by San Diego Magazine. He believed everyone deserves quality dental care and loved to see people's smiles. Jim often donated products and services to local charitable organizations and people he met who needed treatment. Throughout his career, he developed a loyal community of valued patients and colleagues who will miss his expertise, integrity, and compassion. Though his practice was recently sold, his dedicated staff, whom he loved like family members, remain committed to honoring his legacy at the dental practice he established five decades ago. In addition to his devotion to the practice of dentistry, Jim lived life to the fullest. With friends and family, he enjoyed water and snow skiing, playing tennis, traveling, sharing a delicious meal and bottle of good wine, and working on different projects at his trailer on the Colorado River. His greatest love of all was family. Jim was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Viola June Munce, and his brother Jay. He is survived by his wife Jane, their blended family of five children, James Brian Munce, Jamie Munce Morinaga, Deena Mione Engler, Andrew Mione, and Nicole Mione-Green, their spouses, 12 grandchildren, his sister June, and a large, close-knit extended family. Everyone who knew and loved Jim will miss his patience, kindness, and generosity. The family held a small private memorial service at Miramar National Cemetery on August 18, 2020. They plan on hosting a Celebration of Life in the spring of 2021. A memorial fund has been established in his name at the Geis Dental Clinic at the Veterans Village of San Diego. The family wishes to thank everyone who has sent their condolences and support, as they remember and honor the man they all loved and cherished.

Jim will be missed by so many people whose lives were touched by him. He was a great dentist, and that is how I know Jim. But through his family I also know what a great husband, father, and grandfather he was to his family. I'm sure Jim is looking down on us today from Heaven with a smile on his face as we gather to remember him and celebrate his great life. He was blessed in many ways, and he blessed so many of us in turn by how he gave of himself to others. May God bless you, Jim, and keep your memory in our hearts.

What can I not say about Dr Munce? I was lucky enough to be hired by him as his side kick in 1974. I continued being his dental assistant until 1986. Even at the young age of 17 he treated me as an equal. We went through marriages, divorces, babies, illness, and deaths as coworkers but far mire important....Friends. Years later when my dad diwd, I called him. I told him my dad died and i dont know why you were the first person I called. He said "because we are family".
Recently, I got to see him at my sons wedding. He drove 3 hours to get there. He was there when my son was born and he wanted to be there when he got married.
I live in Kansas Cityl now but usually go back to SD yearly. I always make a stop into the office. Im going to miss him so much He was a great boss. Friend, and part of my family. Forever Dr M.

Dr. Munce was my first and only dentist. I was his patient for 46 years. He was the best. He was kind, gentle, and truly cared for his patients. A few years ago, he showed me my file where he had kept a drawing that I made for him when I was a little girl. I was so touched. Even though I only saw him twice a year, I always looked forward to my visits. It was like visiting my dad. Not many people can say that about their dentists. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. I send my condolences to his family and my thanks to his wife, Jane, for the letter.
I'll miss you, Dr. Munce. I owe my beautiful smile to you. :)

I had the honor of being Jim’s dental assistant in the beginning years of his practice across from Balboa Park, 1971-1974. He was good friend, great dentist and we had many good times together. He continued to give wonderful dental care to my family over the years. I’ll always have great memories of him

Dr. Munce was the best dentist I have ever had in my life and I've had many. He was the warmest and kindest person. I was very cautious of dentists since I was a small child, having had some tenuous experiences. From day one with Dr. Munce, I gave him full authority to do whatever was necessary. I had total confidence in him. I especially loved how he would admire his own work with a chuckle. Our whole family was devastated at the news of his passing. We were patients of his for over 30 years. We will miss him terribly. We send our sincere condolences to his entire extended family. He spoke of you often. The Ed Silverman Family

I am so fortunate to have experienced Jim’s love and kindness and am grateful for everything he has done for my family. Each holiday, we counted on him to say the blessing and lead the toasts to friends and family in ours lives and to those we have loved and lost. This year, my heart breaks that he is among those no longer with us in person. However, I am thankful for all the good times and memories and will always remember the joy and fun we had. Cheers, Jim, we love you!
