My sincere condolences to the family and may God endow each of you with continuous peace and strength. Back in 2005 myself and my colleagues were invited to Mendolsohn's office for a congratulatory celebration for receiving accreditation to offer advanced degrees. What I experienced then was only magnified at his beautiful memorial service. His life service just goes to show that you never know how you impact the lives of others. I garnered a great deal of respect for him and his character. Certainly there were all walks of life who came to show their appreciation for a life well lived, a leader well rounded, a passionate physician and a teacher that even at his memorial was encouraging others to "Distill the Essence". His humility definitely captured the essence of life....Love God...Love People, in doing so you create a painting that can only be rivaled by heaven. Dr. Mendelsohn, thank you so much for all your work and dedication and for sharing yourself with the world! To the family thank you for sharing this great life with us. He took the road less traveled and that has made a HUGE difference for us all.

I did not know Dr Mendelsohn, but after reading his obituary, I regard him as a hero of giant proportions. As a 19yr survivor of stage III oral cancer, and an OHNC support group facilitator, I applaud his dedication to cancer research, and enhancing the lives of oncology patients. How sad that the awful disease that he worked many years of his life to eradicate, cruelly took his life. It merely illustrates how much more work has to be done to conquer this insidious disease.

John was a wonderful friend and classmate. He epitomized the ideal physician as he was outstanding in patient care, research, administration and teaching. He was a superb leader of the MD Anderson and Sloan-Kettering and with all his groundbreaking discoveries and career maintained a humble and unassuming personality. He was a great person and will be sorely missed. Our condolences go to Anne and John's family.

John Mendelsohn was a scientific titan, bold and courageous leader, and modelled the way. His dedication to the next generation of humane scientists was illustrated by his academic leadership program that he personally attended and shared his beginnings. He and Margaret Spits turned me into a butterfly from a caterpillar. Michele Forman distinguished professor and department chair Purdue University.

John was an outstanding person who understood humanity and how he, his research and the organizations that he led could benefit people. He was an exceptional "boss" and I indeed feel honored to have had the opportunity to serve with him as the CEO of MD Anderson Outreach Corporation. I learned so much from him as he led by example! That learning continued upon my return to Houston in 2014. John and I had lunch and it was like we had never skipped a beat since we last met. An exceptional leader, husband, father and friend. The world is better because of John and we all will miss him. Sarah and my prayers and thoughts are with Anne and his family.
