Kendra Jeffcoat Obituary

Dr. Kendra Jeffcoat July 2, 1947 - February 28, 2017 - San Diego - Dr. Kendra Jeffcoat passed peacefully at home with her husband, Jay, son, Ryan and beloved dog, Buddy, after a three-day visit of her daughter, Kasey. Kendra fought a miraculous four-year battle of Stage IV lung cancer, which metastasized to the brain with a Grand Mal Seizure on January 6, 2013. Born in Glen Ellyn, Ill, Kendra moved with her parents Norma and Harley Kasell to Los Angeles, where Norma managed Kim Novak's Hollywood career. Kendra attended Birmingham H.S. in Encino, where she was an active student leader, head song leader and homecoming queen. She graduated with honors from H.S. and entered UCSB. At UCSB, she pledged Kappa Alpha Theta, was Secretary of the Isla Vista League and became Executive Assistant to the A.S. Student Body President (who three years later became her husband, Jay). From her high school involvement in the Masonic youth organization, Rainbow Girls, Kendra was elected to the California statewide position of Grand Worthy Advisor. She traveled throughout the state, deferring her junior year at the University, giving motivational and leadership speeches to Rainbow Assemblies. Kendra Jeffcoat served as a community college faculty member in Speech, English, and Psychology for 25 years, and a community college administrator for 13 years. She served as Dean of the School of Social/Behavioral Sciences and Multicultural Studies at Mesa College from 2000-2003, before spending a year as the District's Interim Assistant Chancellor of Instructional Services and Economic Development. During her long career in community colleges, she also served as Interim Dean of Student Affairs (Grossmont College), and Vice President of Academic Services (Imperial Valley College). She worked as a member of the Management Development Commission of the Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA) and as a member of the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges Board of Governors. Most recently, Kendra served as an Assistant Professor of San Diego State University's Department of Administration, Rehabilitation, and Postsecondary Education, where she taught in its community college doctoral program. She also led the San Diego and Imperial Counties' Community Colleges Association (SDICCCA) Internship program for several years.Even after her medically-required retirement, two and a half years after her diagnosis, Kendra continued her service to the District, often serving as a facilitator for Board and Cabinet retreats, as well as the 2014 joint meeting of the San Diego Community College District and the San Diego Unified School District governing boards. She was also active in service to her community, having served as Club President of the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary, and was recently honored with the Paul Harris Fellow + 6. Kendra served as a Board member of the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, and Chair of the Board of the Poway Chamber of Commerce. She was a long time member of her beloved PEO sisterhood in both El Centro and Poway/RB (Chapter UU).She was an active member of the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church, serving on two Pastor Nominating Committees, the Personnel Committee and recently as a Stephen Minister. Kendra began her college career at UCSB before transferring to UCLA, where she earned a Bachelor and Master of Arts degree in Speech Communication. She received a second Master of Arts degree in Psychology from Connecticut College before receiving her Ph.D. in Industrial Organizational Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology. Kendra is survived by her husband of 48 years, Jay Jeffcoat (Rancho Bernardo, CA), daughter, Jessica "Kasey" Jeffcoat Fritz, husband Lance, his three children Nicholas, Gabi and Jack (San Antonio, TX), son, Ryan Jeffcoat (San Diego, CA), brother, John Kasell (Costa Mesa, CA), sister, Kristen Nikosey, husband Tom (Bell Canyon, CA), three nieces, and a nephew. Her Memorial Celebration will be at the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church RBCPC on April 1, at 10 A.M. A reception will be held at the church, and Kendra's requested "Big Party" will follow at the Bernardo Winery. I was a 17 year old first- time junior college student, who left high school a year early, when I had my first class with Dr. Jeffcoat. I was wholly unprepared for college- emotionally and academically. I had little to no family support. Not only did Dr. Jeffcoat inspire my mind- she inspired my soul and my sense of self. She showed me learning was fun, taught me about self-care and self-reflection. I cannot possibly speak to her influence in my life-simply by learning from her in a few junior-college classes.
I went from the youngest child of six, in a poverty-ridden family of the uneducated, to become a veteran teacher of 23 years, who coached math to teachers across the county, finished a Master´s from Saint Mary´s College, and an Administrative credential. She influenced my academic, personal, and internal life immensely and I am forever grateful to have shared time with her- thank you for allowing me to know the gift that was Kendra Jeffcoat. With gratitude, Hillary Milani (she knew me as Hillary Hall).

Dearest Jay,
After how many many long years, I will be traveling to visit friends again in your area in September (2023) and was hoping while there to renew my long ago friendship with Kendy and with you. So, to learn only now of Kendy's untimely death six years ago brings a terrible shock and a sadness no words can describe.
This is the only way I know how to reach you at this time.
Please know my heart is with you, Jay.
With genuine affection and great sorrow for your incredible loss,

Hi Jay,
I hope you doing well. I know it has been five years since Kendra passed. It has been eight years since Barney passed. Life does go on, but the void remains. We were both blessed to have had them as long as we did.
Stay well.

I was a student of Dr. Jeffcoat at Imperial Valley College back in the 80s . I was also a performer (saxophonist) with IVC's jazz and Band ensembles under Jack Fuesler who was also my private teacher for many years- I think we shared a stage with Kasey once or twice. Dr. Jeffcoat was so inspirational to me that I went on to declare a psychology major at Cal State. I will never forget my first class with her - on the first day she sat in a desk among the students and pretended to be one of us. She proceeded to start spreading rumors about how mean the instructor was'.... only to reveal herself after a few minutes. One of my favorite moments from IVC! I am sorry to hears bout her passing, and I wish the family well.

Dear Jeffcoat family, May your happy memories comfort you. Kendra was a caring person, and an inspiration to others. My Lara completed a psychology degree and a master in Education, emphasis counseling, inspired by her teaching and compassion.
We both had fondness for our Rainbow Girl days, and families who loved baseball. Rest in peace, lovely Kendra.

Best teacher I ever had at IVC. She was smart, beautiful and full of life. She motivated me to move forward with my education. I will never forget her smile while sipping on some TAB. Thank you Dr. Jeffcoat for inspiring me. May you rest in peace.

Much sympathy to the Jeffcoat family on the passing of Kendra.

I have fond memories working with her @ Grossmont College and more recently serving as the SDICCCA Regional Internship Coordinator. She was sincere and most personable working with faculty and interns. Her picture is still showing on the SDSU Interwork website with a group of faculty interns.

May special memories and stories you think of bring your strength and laughter in the difficult days ahead.
