KENNETH FRANKE Obituary

FRANKE, KENNETH FRANCIS March 13, 1936 to Dec. 17, 2010 Kenneth F. Franke was born on March 13, 1936 and was the only child of Radford and Marie Franke. He passed away peacefully the morning of December 17, 2010, after a brief illness. He was a beloved husband and father to his family and a mentor to many others. Ken's parents were the Coast Guard lighthouse keepers at Ballast Point Lighthouse, San Diego. Ken spent his first 18 years calling the lighthouse home. With San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean as his playground, he had the most exciting time growing up. As a teen-ager he would frequently be asked by the Coast Guard Cutter crew at Ballast Point to fill in for missing members of the 83-foot rescue boat. They never had to ask twice. They would then go search the ocean for downed pilots from North Island Naval Air Station or for mariners in distress. Ken attended Saint Augustine High School. His favorite sports were running track and sailing. It was during these years that he met his sweetheart who he later married. Her name was LaVerne Heim. She lived on a chicken ranch in Lemon Grove. After being raised on lobster, abalone and fish, dating a girl with an unlimited supply of his favorite food (chicken) was a great find! He graduated in 1954 from Saints. At this point he was an accomplished Coast Guard trained crewman. After high school, Ken was accepted into the California Maritime Academy. He also joined the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve to begin his formal career. These were exciting times as he cruised the world on the Training Ship "Golden Bear." He graduated in 1957 with a marine engineering degree and joined his second love the Coast Guard. His first love, LaVerne, became his wife on March 11, 1958. So began an incredible journey throughout the world for Ken, LaVerne, and later their children, Kenny, Anne-marie, Randy, and Karen. They lived in North Carolina, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, New York, California, and Guam. While the family was at home, Ken would often be at sea. He spent time in the North Atlantic aboard the Cutters "Mendota" and "Humbolt" and deep in the polar ice pack on the ice breaker "Glacier." He had many harrowing experiences while at sea. However, the most interesting rescue was above the Niagara Falls. It was late at night and a boat with a family had broken down and drifted into the rapids above the falls. He navigated the Franke family boat down river to the rapids, anchoring it as far into the white water as he dared. He tied a rope from the boat onto himself. Ken then in darkness waded in chest deep water through the rapids to the family in trouble. He brought them one at a time back to his boat and took them to safety. After a 27 year career in the Coast Guard, Captain Ken Franke retired. He became a Marine Surveyor and was Director of the San Diego Maritime Museum for several years working on the restoration of the Star of India and the Berkley. He then began another Coast Guard related career that lasted over two decades training the new USCG inspectors on marine safety inspections. He trained several thousand inspectors during those years and left an incredible legacy. Ken was a strong leader, humble public servant and had a strong faith in God. He was be deeply missed by all, especially his five grandchildren. There will be a Rosary at 7:30 p.m., on Monday, December 20th, at St. Theresa of Carmel Parish, 4355 Del Mar Trails Road, San Diego, CA 92130. The services and celebration of Ken's life will be the following morning at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 21st, at the same location. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions be sent to the Propagation of the Faith, P.O. Box 82386, San Diego, CA 92138.

Ken was a great friend and mentor. He came to Minnesota many times to train boiler inspectors on how to be boat inspectors. We always enjoyed it when he was here. I will miss having his vast knowledge as a resource and most of all his friendship. All of us in Minnesota will miss him dearly.

Ken Franke was a neighbor and a fellow parishioner. He was a generous and compassionate man who would drop what he was doing to help out when needed. Last year, one of our smoke alarms began to screech and wouldn't let up. Not just any smoke alarm, but the one at the top of the 12 foot ceiling. I was getting pretty desperate. When Ken heard of my plight, he came right over. He had on his coveralls and appeared to have been painting. The ladder was not high enough, but, with the aid of a wooden filing cabinet, Ken saved the day and put the alarm out of its misery. As he was leaving, he said, without a hint of a smile,"If it happens again, just shoot it". What a wonderful man-my heart goes out to his family and many, many friends as they cope with this loss.

Captain Franke was a true gentleman and professional. I was fortunate to have attended his Wood Boat/FRP class in the mid 2000's. In my 25 years of Coast Guard service, no other educational experience matched that of Capt Franke's class. His unique style and passion for teaching should be copied by all inspiring training professionals. I love wood boats, but not nearly like Capt Franke did. He probably forgot more about wood boats than what I've learned. He is a true professional and I'm proud to be serving in the same service that he served so faithfully over his Coast Guard career. My heart and wishes extend to the Captain's family and friends as we all grieve the loss of such a gentleman.

I would like to extend my sympathy to Captain Franke's family. I will remember him not only as a great instructor, but also as a wonderful human being who shared his seemingly limitless knowledge with his students and also opened his house to the class. Fair winds and following seas, Captain.

Capt. Franke is one of those persons that you always look up to as an example of a great coastguarman. He not only unconditionally shared his wealth of knowledge and experience as a CG Marine Inspector with us in Wood/FRP School. He teached us other aspects of life and what we really represented to the community as an honoreable organization (USCG). Mate, you will always be missed. GOD bless you always...sincerely, Mr. 1000

I too had the pleasure of attending Captain Franke's Wood Boat School in 2006. Not only did Captain Franke teach my class and I a great deal in such a short period of time, he also extended his warm hospitality to the entire class throughout our two week stay in San Diego. Sir, you will truly be missed by your Coast Guard family. Semper Paratus and God Speed!

My sympathy to the family of Capt Franke's in your loss. I was one Capt Franke's student from the Sept 1997 class. He was already well established back then as the go to guy for wood boat questions. His knowledge of the subject was probably more than some of us could ever hope to have. He will be missed I'm sure by family and the Coast Guard M field alike.

Ken was one of those cousins that enjoyed his toys. I think his favorite toy was the jag. He let me take it for a spin. He told me to hit the gas so I pushed the pedal to the metal and we were sailing at 90 plus MPH down the San Diego freeway! Ken, keep your foot on the pedal on your journey to heaven. We will see you down the road one day.

Lavern your husband was a champ and I will miss him dearly.

My condolences to LaVerne and the entire family. Ken was a true hero, husband, father, grandfather and dear friend for many years. The funeral and eulogies were a well deserved and moving tribute. What a great legacy to leave and surely St Peter will say Look who's here, Noah needs advice on fixing the Ark! I am honored to have been one of the millions of Ken's friends and he will be missed.

While we didn't know Kenneth Franke Sr., we worked with and were friends with Ken Franke, his son at Harbor Police.
It was obvious what a positive influence Ken's father had on his life. Everyone knew what an important figure Ken's father was in his life.
For Ken's family, we know your father will be missed. Our condolences to the whole family.

My sympathy to LaVerne, and indeed the entire Franke family.
Ken was a wonderful boss for several years at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. As Executive Director, he worked hard to save three of their vessels, which may be sunk by now if not for his efforts.
Ken was a gentleman, and hosted the company at his home on several occassions. His warm smile, caring ways, and sense of humor will most certainly be missed.

My wife, Nancy, and I came to know Ken while we were stationed at the Naval War College in Newport, RI in 1977-78. Our friendship was extended to his wife Laverne when after graduation from the War College we opted to rent their home in Del Mar while I was stationed at NAS Alameda and the Franke's were ordered overseas. It was a wonderful tour of duty for us and we made many life-long friends because of the Franke's hospitality. We were distressed to hear about Ken's passing and we are praying for him and his entire family during this grief-filled time. We have lost a good friend and he will be missed very much. Fair winds and following seas, Ken.

Ken and Laverne have been my neighbors for 36 years. Ken was of great support to me after my husband passed away, always available for some little household problem. He would come over wearing his sealskin slippers (that my dog found of great interest) and diagnose the problem for me. He was a kind, honorable man, with a dry sense of humor. And, he could certainly dance like Fred Astaire. He will be missed so much.

Capt Franke was a true American Patriot and a rare individual who was gracious in sharing his knowledge. I attended one of his wooden boat training courses and was always grateful on how he and his family opened their home up to all of the students. I still have a Craftsman screwdriver with the tip cut off he gave to me over 20 years ago for "poking" wooden boats. My heart and prayers go out to the Franke fmaily, God Bless, Fair winds and following seas Capt!

I had the honor of being one of Captain Franke's students. He invited the whole class, twenty or so of us, to his home for dinner and where we had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Franke and being made to feel completely at home.

I only met Captain Franke once. His passion was infectious. I was awed by his marine safety knowledge when a student attending wood boat school in San Diego in the early 1990’s. He had a passion for humanity, and he expressed it greatly through the USCG and his passion for life still abounds. His legacy in helping the CG and the life he lived was one of uncommon virtue and one that will continue to inspire me the remaining days of my life. I thank God for Captain Ken Franke and the life he lived, he lived to the fullest! My deepest sympathies to his family and the St.Theresa of Carmel Parish. A loving donation will be made to the Propagation of The Faith in his honor.

Mr. Franke..my "other" Dad. I will always remember how he took care of my son and me over the past 8 years while renting a home from him. He wasn't just a landlord- he was a mentor and an incredible friend. He taught me so much about hard work, integrity, and life. Heaven gained another angel. (and I'll bet he's wearing that blue jumpsuit). I will miss him so much. Kelly Conti, and son Kaleb
