Kenneth Hartley Obituary

HARTLEY KENNETH HOLCOMB Kenneth, 75, died quietly at home November 19, 2004 of complications from several strokes. Uncle Kenny as he was known to all who knew him, lived a full and rich life. His love of family, free spirit, and sense of adventure guaranteed that he got his money's worth on earth. Raised in North Park, he attended Jefferson Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High, Hoover High, and San Diego State before enlisting as a naval Aviation Cadet in 1951. He saw much service as a helicopter pilot in the Korean War, rescuing several downed aviators. After Naval Service, Uncle Kenny worked in The Hartley Real Estate and Insurance business. When his older brother Bill was tragically killed along with his wife Joan in a private plane crash in 1961, Kenneth and his wife Evelyn undertook the raising of their four young daughters, Catherine, Elizabeth, Susan, and Martha in their Point Loma home. They provided a wonderful environment to the girls, markedly improving what could have been a lonely and difficult childhood. For 10 years, Uncle Kenny and Evelyn helped run the Youth Fellowship Program at All Souls' Episcopal Church, generating adventures which most will never forget. Kenneth had many hobbies, including photography, camping, travel, and music. He was a good piano player and sang with a beautiful baritone voice. Kenneth is survived by Evelyn Braddock Hartley, his loving wife of 50 years, his daughters Catherine Hartley Frost, Elizabeth Hartley, Susan Hartley Mazur and Martha Hartley, his older brother Paul J. Hartley, Jr., eight grandchildren and a host of long time friends. There will be a celebration of life service at All Souls' Episcopal Church at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, followed by a sunset scattering of his ashes in the ocean at the family home in Pacific Beach at 4 p.m. Because of Kenneth's love for the ocean please make a donation to Accessible San Diego Beach Power Chairs, PO Box 124526 SD CA 92112 or San Diego Hospice in lieu of flowers. Kenny, although I knew you briefly, upon listening to your stories while Martha enacted her Van Cliburn renditions, I became fascinated with your life, and your kindness and positive words left me with the feeling I had your confidence and could become a good friend. Evie has been a temple throughout, and stalwart matriarch that she has been, will remain a force in your absence. You are considerably missed. Gary Slobe

I'll always remember Kenny water skiing with the girls on Mission Bay. The boat was small, but so were the girls. It was good to know him and Evelyn.

As a Guaymas kid from the 60s and 70s mine was only one of the many lives Uncle Kenny influenced. Someone could write volumes about his life and his various enterprises and adventures. He really was "King of the Road."

I had the pleasure of working with Kenny two years ago after his rehab. He is a most memorable character and during our brief relationship we shared some touching moments. Thanks for the memories, Kenny!
