Larry Upp was fantastic. It does not surprise me to learn of the wonderful work he did after he was principal of Scripps Elementary in the 50's and early 60's, when I knew him. You didn't find the room to mention what those of us on La Jolla Shores knew him for. Constant motion. Always a bow tie. A wonderful bugler! When he saluted the flag raising every morning, all the kids on the playground stood still and silent. I don't recall ever seeing a teacher enforce their attention his bugling brought the significance of the flag home to every one of us. For several years I was the flag monitor and raised it in the morning as he blew. I must say he made it thrilling.
And, you didn't have room to mention Three Arrows Camp! I and my friends had some wonderful summers at Three Arrows, in what was then mostly deserted Sorrento Valley. I ride the morning train past that camp many mornings, and always recall the fun times. During the summer we could call him Larry but never during the school year.
His picture in the paper is the same as that residing on many, many class pictures. Always the bow tie. What a great guy.
Best regards,
Bill Montgomery
