Lawrence Sherwood Obituary

Lawrence John Sherwood November 24, 1926 - December 7, 2016 San Diego Lawrence John Sherwood, "Larry," passed away on December 7, 2016 in the presence of his loving family. Larry was born in Syracuse, Kansas in 1926 and spent his entire life in San Diego. His early childhood was spent in San Diego where he attended Hamilton Grammar School and he often took trips to Nebraska and Kansas to visit relatives with whom he would maintain ties throughout his life. His family later moved to Bostonia in El Cajon. He played football and graduated from Grossmont High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Larry was present in the fleet and witnessed the Armistice signing in Tokyo Bay in 1945. After the war he attended San Diego State College and then began his career working at Cuyamaca Meats in El Cajon from where he would retire in in 1977. He wed Florence Jane Sears in 1951 and they were married for 65 years and had three children: Lee Sherwood of Jamul, Lauren Bradley of San Diego, and Allison Sherwood of San Diego. Larry loved his grandchildren dearly and was always present and involved in their lives as they grew up. He loved playing and watching golf, horse racing at Del Mar, and had a passion for restoring and refinishing furniture. He is survived by his wife Jane, three children, and four grandchildren. His love and caring ways for his family, kindness, and genuine interest in others will always be remembered and he will be deeply missed by his family for the rest of their lives.

Larry and my father worked together for many years at Cuyamaca Meats in El Cajon. I remember fond childhood times with Larry, and my dad around that plant. Larry always had a cigar going all the time. every now and then he would send me over to Henery's to get him one, and remind me to tell Henery, its for Larry not me. But my favorite memory was when Larry had surgery to his hand. And his hand was in a ball cast covering his whole hand. His house in El Cajon was down the street from ours. He gave me $5.00 to rake all the leaves, that was a lot of leaves! I still drive by that house and tell that story. From the Laudermilk family. We give you our dearest condolences.
