LLOYD WHITWORTH Obituary

WHITWORTH, LLOYD March 27, 1924 to August 15, 2011 "Whit", as his friends called him, had a very full, loving life and passed peacefully. A husband, father, grandfather and all-around family man; Whit leaves behind his loving wife Johanna; their three daughters, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Born and raised in Columbia, Missouri, Whit grew up with motorcycles in his blood. He was riding motorcycles by the age of 8. Whit's love of racing motorcycles took him across Michigan as both crew and racer. He joined the Army, served during World War II and received the WWII Victory Medal as a member of the 6th Engineer Combat Battalion. After his Army days, he found his way to San Diego where he met his wife of 59 years. He sold his motorcycle and hung up his racing digs to welcome his first daughter to the world with a brand new ride - a baby carriage, but he never lost his love of riding. Whit's engineering and electrical talents led him to become an electrical contractor, owning and operating Whit Electric for over 30 years. When he retired, Whit still tinkered with many projects. He was well known for his love of a strongly-brewed cup of black coffee and chatting about everything. He cherished his family and held them always close to his heart. An avid antique motorcycle and car buff, Whit held numerous positions with both national and local chapters of the Antique Automobile Club of America, Lincoln Continental Owners Club and the Antique Motorcycle Club of America. Whit's antique restorations of both cars and motorcycles were well lauded. He had many prized vehicles in his collection. Whit also served as President of the Association of California Car Clubs where he was instrumental in the creation of the California Historical Vehicle license plate program. This is my most wonderful, loving grandfather. A man of few words - unless you got him talking about politics - a fiercely loyal family man and a giant heart. He filled his house with family, laughter and motor oil. He loved each of his daughters and raised them as if they were sons. He loved his grand children and opened his home to us when we needed safe haven. He spoiled his great-grand children but taught them quiet lessons. He was so important in my life, he gave me away at my wedding with my step-dad and let me cry on his shoulder when I divorced. He was always there to help - never without his handy pocket knife!

I will miss him every day - and hope that I honor his life with how I live mine and raise my children

Lloyd was a very warm person with lots of love for his family and made firm friends with many of the people he met. We remember particularly when he made the trip to Ireland for our wedding where he made friends with people from Kenya, France, and Scotland and they all enjoyed his company. More recently, Lloyd, with Hannah, always made a point of coming to see us when we visited San Diego, and we enjoyed varied conversations over dinner or cups of tea. We'll miss him. With love and prayers, Daniel, Carol, Aisling and Liam.
