Marie Murphy Obituary

MURPHY, MARIE SINGER Marie Murphy Singer, born Marie Patricia Murphy on St. Patrick's Day, 17 March 1952, died on 4 October, 2005 after a three year battle with ovarian cancer. Over the years she counseled and provided a safe haven and loving care for many friends. She was generous in both her time and energy but most of all she loved and was loved by her extended family. She grew up in Worcester, MA where her mother and brothers still live. Marie attended Our Ladies of the Angels Elementary School and St. Peter's High School. She was a graduate of The New England College in Arundel, Sussex, England with a BS in Sociology & Psychology, received her teaching credential from Pt. Loma Nazarene and her Masters in Middle School Education from SDSU. As a child she organized the Daredevils, a group of children who ran through the nearby woods performing feats of daring. Later she frightened many passengers by always putting the pedal to the metal, which induced her oldest brother to suggest that driving doesn't have to be an adventure! It seemed to have no effect. She was called Mother Marie at an early age for her sage advice and continued to counsel friends throughout her life. Her father called her "Brezzy Rezzy" for the way she entered and left a room, seemingly without a care in the world. She was a high school cheerleader and would practice the cheers with all the neighborhood children. From the age of three Marie's parents rented a cottage every August at Drake's Island, Maine. Children she met there and grew up with have remained life long friends. Marie loved the ocean and as a teenager came in third in a Maine womens surfing contest. At her college in England she helped organize rock and folk concerts and sometimes introduced the performers including BB King whose offer to party with her after the show was - regrettably - declined. Traveling was one of her many passions. In 1972 she was in Israel during the Yom Kippur War working on an independent study of kibbutz life. She traveled all over Europe, loved the Caribbean and Mexico, and sojourned to Ireland to connect with her grandparents' roots. After working in Boston for the Architect's Collaborative, she bought a car from her grandfather for one dollar and drove across the country by herself in 1975. She slept in her car instead of spending the money her father had given her for motels. Before becoming a teacher Marie worked in the business office of Scripps Hospital and was the business manager for Howard Anderson Architects in Del Mar. She had a 17 year love affair with all her students at Zamorano Fine Arts Academy in southeast San Diego. She would play classical music to sooth her students and Reggae, Folk or Rock when the occasion called for it. Marie's love of music, her love of life, her vibrant personality, her radiant smile, her easy sense of humor, and her interest in and concern for acquaintances and friends, made an indelible impression on everyone she met. She was passionate, visually aware, adventuresome, loyal, generous, caring, strong willed and fiercely independent. She was a voracious reader of newspapers and was knowledgeable about human, local and world events. Marie is survived by her mother Theresa Murphy, brothers Lawrence, William, Mark and Brian Murphy, husband David Raphael Singer, step-sons Gidon & Nathanael Singer, daughter-in-laws Christine Gage and Stacy Kramer, step-grandchildren Taylor, Corten & Elory Singer, and nephews Colin and Barrett Wilson Murphy, Curtis and Andrew Murphy, Greg Murphy, Jack and Vincent Murphy and nieces Molly Wilson Murphy, Janlyn Murphy and Nora Murphy. Donations can be made in Marie's name to: The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, 14 Pennsylvania Plaza, Suite 1400, New York, New York 10122 - (800-873-9569). Mrs. Murphy-Singer was my 6th grade teacher and was a great influence that impacted my life greatly. She taught me to never look down and always hold my head up high and she taught us how to give a proper hand shake!!! I am sorry that I did not have a chance to say goodbye and found out of her passing years later, but I wanted to share what a great person, teacher, and friend she was. My prayers are with her and her family.

David & Family,

Marie was my sister, my friend, my life-saver and a mentor in my life. She was such an important person to me...from a very early age, she taught me the importance of a good belly laugh; how to laugh at yourself (and oh yes, others too!). She taught me how to be fearless no matter what is in front of you. Most importantly, she taught me to love and embrace every minute of every day. She also taught me how to walk really fast; how to hang 5; and how to twirl a baton! Marie will forever be a part of my life, even in death.

My love and deepest sympathy to you all for such a tremendous loss.

David and Family,

I am signing this for my husband as he is not exactly computer savvy. Bill was extremely fond of Marie and he and I would like to express our sadness with her passing. Her spirit will forever sing in harmony with the ocean's soothing song at Drake's Island. Take care...

Ms. Murphy-Singer was a brilliant woman. She set an example to all students at Zamorano. She gave off wonderful energy and even though a selected few were in her class, she treated every student like one of her own. She left an impact on all of our lives and Zamorano will never be the same.

Mrs. Murphy-Singer's passing was such a surprise to me, even through the battle of cancer that woman was so positive. Although she wasnt my 6th grade teacher I remember her treating me like she was. I would sometimes walk around the basketball courts with her, just talking about school. And it was so nice to talk to someone who would listen. I am saddened by the fact that she is gone now, but I know she is with God and may she rest in peace. We will all miss her truly and remember her always.

MRS. MURPHY-SINGER, WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH!

Wow where do I begin, well for one Marie or for me Mrs. Murphy-Singer was one of my best teachers and for me I only have like 3 at the most. I will always miss her class and miss visiting her. I liked her class because she made us feel special as if her own kids, ya she yelled here and there but that will never matter to how much we/I will miss her. Sorry if this dont really make sense but you know certain things you can't put into words....To Marie's family please hang in there

To the Family of Marie Murphy-Singer:

You all know what a wonderful person she was and the great changes she's made in all of your lives, but for me as her student in her 6th grade class of 2002, she taught me about myself. And may I speak on behalf of the other students, Ms. Murphy-Singer was a second mom to all of us because of the life lessons we were faced with everyday. I remember everyday before we left the class we had to shake her hand or the time we went on a field trip to Sea Port Village and she let us roam around for hours and just be mature young adults....I can honestly say that if I didnt have Ms. Murphy-Singer as my 6th grade teacher, my goals I set education wise wouldn't be to such high standards because in the back of my mind is what she always used to tell me "Don't sell yourself short of something I know your capable of." In closing, from field trips every two weeks all over San Diego to the life lessons and heart to heart conversations, Ms. Murphy-Singer will always be my inspiration and I am very fourtunate to have had her in my life.

May she rest peacefully.

Love Always,

Kirstyne Lange

Ms. Murphy-Singer was the best teacher i could ever hope for. During her fight with cancer, when i was still attending Bell, and i ran laps around the school, i would always salute in the direction of Zamorano to pay my respects and ensure that Ms. Murphy-Singer's hope and determination in walking like a train could rub off on me. I always felt more empowered to run faster, and not try to walk...always do my best because of my teacher who always walked her fastest despite of cancer. My friends and i all called her "the TRAIN."

I will always remember how, despite of her ailments, she offered me advice on my life from her hospital room. I called her for advice on schooling and she then called back, and...not knowing the state of her physical condition learned that she had put aside for a moment, her pain and struggles to help me.

I love Ms. Murphy-Singer with all my heart, and i assure her that whenever i run laps, i will still (its become a habit now) salute to the sky.

Dear David, Gidon, and Family,

I was saddened to hear of the passing of your wife and step-mother. From the information in the obituary, she was obviously a very special woman and apparently enriched the lives of all who knew her. I regret that I did not have the chance to meet her personally.

David,

I consider myself lucky to have known and shared in Marie's life.

The 'little red house' may have housed Marie's body but her smile and laugh and her determined will to live will always be remembered by everyone on Drakes Island.

Respectfully,

Mrs. Murphy Singer was one of the best teachers i ever had i missed her so much after graduating from 6th grade in 1999. I came to visit the last time when i was in 10th right before she retired. she helped me in so much, i believe without her i would have never reached where i am today. I graduated from highschool and now i go to grossmont college. She had a great way of teaching i learned alot that year; from making friends, to reading at a 10th grade level, and understanding math better. I will miss her dearly i cant tell her now but i want to thank her for everything she has done for me, Thank You Mrs Murphy Singer Rest In Peace

Dear Uncle David,

How do I even begin to express how much Marie has inspired not only myself but countless friends, family and students? Beauty, generosity, independence, intellegence and of course crazy spontaneous fun radiated from her soal. I hope that one day I can love my husband as much as she loved you and if needed take care of him the way that you took care of her. Her passing will only inspire me to work hard to achieve my dreams and she will never be far from my thoughts or prayers. I hope that you will never wander too far from our family. I hope you know that we don't just think of you as Marie's husband or a son-in-law but we think of you as a son, brother, uncle and mentor because you complemented each other so well. I will always love her and Uncle David, I will always love you.

David and family,

It was shock and deep sadness when I heard of Marie's passing. She had such caring and compassion. It seems like yesterday that I arrived in SD with Brian and Marie took us all under her wing, setting us up in our first appartment, giving us guidance in the who/what/where of San Diego.

Her help was immeasurable, but that was Marie.

My thoughts and prayers are with you,

Big Murph

To the family of Marie-Singer Murphy

My thoughts and prayers are with all of Marie's family and friends. The first week I moved to La Jolla from Worcester, Marie and David invited me over for tea. They made me feel so welcomed so much like her family back on Brookline Street in Worcester, where they made me feel right at home so long ago.It was a great privilege to write about the Murphy clan in all their exploits. My love to all of you and may Marie be at peace.

I can`t believe Mrs. Murphy-Singer died, she wasn`t only a teacher but more like a friend teaching you stuff... you could relate to her on a personal level. I don`t no about you guys but she was my inspiration in 6th grade, I wanted to fail so i could have her again because she was just that amazing.

I remember her class like it was yesterday, the gallon of water and her walking really really fast, she was like the healthiest person, i thought she would live far longer then this.

The only thing that is helping me personally get through this is the fact, she isn`t suffering anymore, I mean with the cancer, even though she was a fighter. Shes with God now. but i miss her already, you`ll truely be miss Mrs. Murphy-Singer. I love you Mrs. Murphy-Singer

Mrs. Murphy-Singer (Eddie Murphy likes to Sing!), was my sixth grade teacher (class of '01). She was not only a teacher, but a friend and an inspiration. I looked up to Ms. Murphy-Singer soo much! She was so healthy, she drank a gallon of water a day, flossed her teeth and walked really fast!

O, how i admired Ms. Murphy-Singer!! I always wanted to be as healthy as her. I now floss my teeth twice a day because she said you would live longer if you do so. Now I don't know whether to keep flossing my teeth or not. I think I get it, if you floss your teeth, you will be healthier for the time you do live. And that's exactly how Ms. Murphy-Singer was.

She will be greatly missed and never forgotten! At least we know now that she is not in pain anymore and she is with our Heavenly Father. He will keep her safe and she will be waiting there for us in the end. I love you Ms. Murphy-Singer.

Love always, Leslie Williamson (c/o '01)
