MATTHEW CARRINGTON Obituary

CARRINGTON, MATTHEW "BUTCH" Matthew Andrew "Butch" Carrington, born in Pittsburgh, PA on March 17, 1942 the son of Edward and Susie Carrington. He deceased peacefully on October 28, 2010. The Carrington family moved to Southern California where Butch attended Centennial High School graduating in 1959. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and received his basic training in San Diego. Butch was highly decorated for his naval service. He rose through the ranks retiring from active duty in 1984 as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. He returned to San Diego to work in sports fishing at H&M Landing. Later, Butch became employed by the State of California's EDD from 1990 until 2004 when he retired for a second time. While in the Navy, Butch was introduced to his wife, Kazue, the true Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin, and the lay organization Soka Gakkai International (SGI). Inspired by Nichiren's philosophy, Butch devoted himself to developing his faith, inspiring others, and providing care and support to the members of the SGI. Butch continued to grow and develop in the SGI becoming a minister of true Buddhism and attaining the responsibility of Men's Division Vice Zone leader. Butch is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kazue, his brother, the Bishop James Carrington, nephews, nieces and his faithful companion, Howie. A celebration of Butch's life will be held on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at 1:00 p.m., at the Four Points Sheraton's Pavilion Room, at 8110 Aero Dr., San Diego, CA 92123, tel. (858) 810-5610. Butch got me through many struggles with his wise words and gentle compassion. He was a realist and spoke frankly which strangely helped me to relax and have confidence. He came all the way to Ensenada Mexico to conduct my husband's memorial service and came a second time with Mr.. Wada as a supportive arm. I felt happy and safe with his huge presence in the world. My heart aches to lose him but as we Buddhists know, we will all be together again in our next lives. I know he is luxuriating in his trip to the cosmos. Travel well, dear man.
