Hey, Popsey ...
Well, it's just shy of one week until Christmas. Our house is all decorated in anticipation of Stephanie and Paul being here. They will arrive Saturday and I can’t wait. Jonathan and Ashley will spend their first year in North Carolina with a family at church. One of their friend's Moms was nice enough to invite them to join their family. I am very appreciative of that! I finally finished my baking on Sunday and got my boxes of goodies in the mail yesterday. It’s all the same stuff with the exception of your favorite fruit cake. I just can’t bring myself to make it any more.
Grandma also has your house decorated. Larry helped her get the decorations on the ceiling. I talked to Sarah a couple days ago and she said it looks really nice, as usual.
Well, Popsey … it sure doesn’t get any easier. It seems as though a day doesn’t go by where I don’t have a question that I know you will be able to answer but then pick up the phone to call only to realize that you won’t be at the other end. Mom is really good at some answers (surprisingly more than I ever gave her credit for) but those technical
ones … like what kind of computer component I need … is definitely a Pops question.
As you know, my Calle dog joined you this year. Please take good care of her for me.
Merry Christmas, Pops … We all miss and love you!
Love,
Me

Daddy, the ground is warm enough to plant some bulbs now and yesterday when Gary and I were putting in some gladioli I was telling him about how Ama used to grow them about 10 feet tall, at least that's how tall they seemed to me when I was just a kid. I told him how she would cut them early in the morning and add some of that pretty, soft fern and then dampen paper towels to wrap around the stems, then wrap it all up in waxed paper for us to take to our teachers. I always walked so proudly onto the school grounds carrying the bouquets Ama grew for our teachers. Thinking of her yesterday made me start missing you and I found myself on my hands and knees, digging in the dirt, with tears splashing like raindrops to moisten the earth around the bulbs. There's a part of me which knows that you are right there looking over my shoulder and you know that I am happy, probably happier than I have ever been in my life, but there is also this hollow place, a void which you once filled, which no one and nothing will ever make right. It's a missing thing and I always think...if it's this hard for me, how must it be for Mom? Because surely her hole must be immeasureably bigger than mine.

Hey, Popsey ...
I sit here with tears rolling down my cheeks as I re-read the entries in this guest book. I truly thought maybe it would get easier as time went by but guess what, for me it doesn't.
Maybe it's the holidays that you loved so much. Grandma and I talked the other day about how none of the packages under the tree ever had names on them ... just codes. And how you would give us a clue each day as to what the code on the bottom of each package meant.
Or maybe it's when my computer keyboard went belly up the other day and I picked up the phone to call you to see how to fix it ... but then I couldn't. But then I remembered I had a new keyboard in my closet because you had told me of a sale at CompUSA where when you purchased certain products, with a full rebate from the manufacturer, they were free. Now that I think of it, I guess you are still here looking over me ... and all of us.
I miss you terribly, Pops. I always will. But we will meet again, someday, and all these tears will go away.
Merry Christmas, Pops. I love you.

I did it again the other day. I just about picked up the phone to call you. I wanted to tell you about a show coming on the Discovery Channel I was sure you would enjoy. And then it hit me, like it does each time I do this, that you are not there to answer. So I watched the show by myself and talked to you about it anyways because even though I know you are not there to answer the phone, I know you are listening to me.
Christmas is almost here...it won't be the same without you. Who is going to let me win the turkey wishbone?
Miss you Popsie!!!
Love you
Sarah

Lots has happened since last we communicated, Daddy. Gary and I finally got married in August, but I guess you know that. We bought this pretty little house in the Ozarks and Gary has been busy personalizing it just for us. Last time we were in San Diego Mom allowed Gary to go through some of your tools in the garage and take a few that he wanted, including that big ol' table saw you used to build the house in San Diego. He uses your tools almost every day for one project or another and every now and then he'll come to me and say something like "Pops and I just installed the thermostat" or "Pops and I just cut the molding for the bathroom." Having Gary working on our house with your tools is a little like having you here to guide his hands in the right direction. It goes a little way to fill the void of losing you, but it still doesn't stop the tears. Will the tears ever stop, Daddy?

For just a moment
I am sure I saw
a flicker of light ahead.
Perhaps it was your smile.
Though past now, remembered,
in my heart
like the small sound of
a butterfly passing by.
No night
is so dark
that can not be brightened
with memories of you.
Raindrops carry along
your blessings from heaven
to wash away my tears
and bring me hope anew.
I miss you so much Popsie.

Hi Daddy. While Gary and I have been busy decorating for the holidays we've been sharing lots of memories, old and new, and we sure do feel an emptiness, knowing you're not with us....not with Mom. It's a melancholy time for all of us this year. But the angel on top of our Christmas tree has a big smile on her face, so we know you're up there in Heaven entertaining everyone with that Irish sense of humor which we miss so much. Keep 'em chuckling 'til we get there, okay Daddy?

I will always remember the wonderful times we shared together, but more importantly I will remember the love that he had for his family and friends. I will miss him always.

I wish to extend my greatest sympathy to the family. I know that Popsie had a great life, and has effected so many people throughout his time he shared with us. We will miss him. I remembered when Ashley was a little and he showed her how to throw the tissue into the fan... He always went the extra mile to make all of us smile and laugh. Those of us who knew him were priveledged.
Charlene, I know this is the greatest loss for you, but I believe Popsie is up there looking over you. I will keep you all in my Prayers.
I love you all,
Laurie

It is always sorrowful to hear of the passing of one of our brother firefighters, it is even worse when you have lived so closly as we did in station 2 ( for those that remender) and station 3. I do belive that all of us new guys learned a lot from Captian Mac. He will be missed by all, but his memory will stay with all of us.

Captain "Mac" aka "Fire Plug" a real classy guy & a joy to work for. Mac imparted his many life's experiences to our generation of professional fire fighters. I learned from his composure that one doesn't need to yell to get results & nobody can argue with fair treatment. We had many good times together at the Fire Station. We shared many hearty laugh's too. It was a pleasure to have known & worked with Captain Mac & his memory will live on with those of us who knew him well.
My deepest sympathy to his wonderful family.
