Admiral Speer was captain of USS Constellation CV64 when I made my first deployment in 1974. He left the "Connie" during the cruise with his Change of Command in port at the big Naval Station at Subic Bay in the Philippines.
I was assigned to one of the Airwing Nine squadrons and was with him under his command aboard Constellation for nine months. But in that short time I soon realized how revered he was by his crew. He was a big man and I quickly came to know him as a father (even a grandfather) figure to the entire crew. He liked to address the crew each day and I've not seen another leader who was any more loved and respected by his men. He was the most gracious man. I just discovered his obituary as I was doing some research on his Vietnam combat experiences.

Admiral Speer was such a fine man and the best leader I've ever worked with. I consider it an honor that I had the opportunity to work with him at Tracor Flight Systems in Mohave, CA.

Admiral Speer was a great skipper. We served together in VF-211 in 1966. He was also a MIG Master.

Radm Speer was a great CO FOR USS Blue Ridge. A genuine compassionate yet demanding Captain. While I was still in the Navy in the mid 70s I met then Admiral Speer by chance by the pier as he was going to visit Blue Ridge. I and a friend took a chance and approached him to say hello. After exchanging military customs he spent the next 10 minutes chatting with us. That always impressed me. My sincere sympathies.
