Paul Strauss Obituary

Paul U. Strauss, M.D. January 12, 1928 - November 3, 2017 La Jolla Dr. Paul U. Strauss, a San Diego psychiatrist and business owner, passed away on November 3, 2017 in La Jolla, California due to complications from pulmonary fibrosis. He was 89 years old. Dr. Strauss was born in Lansing, Michigan, the son of German immigrants, Dr. Arnold Strauss and Helene Marie Stelting. After serving in the United States Army Air Corps from 1946-1947, Dr. Strauss graduated from Wayne University in 1949 with a degree in electrical engineering. He spent a year working in the Panama Canal Zone as an engineer before he decided to change careers to medicine, following in the footsteps of his father. In 1958, Dr. Strauss received his medical degree from the University of Michigan. He met his wife, Anita Wuertz, while completing his residency in Denver, Colorado. In 1964, Dr. Strauss accepted a job offer to serve as a psychiatrist with San Diego Community Mental Health Services and moved with his wife and young son Brian to San Diego. Dr. Strauss later went into private practice and forensic psychiatry. It was his true passion to help the thousands of patients whom he treated during his 53-year career in San Diego. He had no desire to retire from a job that he loved, and continued treating patients until one month before his death. Dr. Strauss' inquisitive mind and interest in creating a legacy for his family spurred him to invest in real estate and other enterprises starting in the early 1970's. He ultimately formed a family real estate company that is now run by his children. Dr. Strauss also was the proud owner of a local preschool, Fleur De Lis School, along with his wife. Dr. Strauss' passions were not limited to psychiatry and business. He cared deeply about civil liberties, reproductive rights, and the environment. He received an award from the Coalition for Reproductive Choice in 2007 for being a defender of choice and was a proud supporter of Planned Parenthood, ACLU, KPBS, Emily's List, the Zoological Society of San Diego, and other similar organizations.Another strong passion of Dr. Strauss' was gardening. He frequented nurseries looking for new plants and flowers to add to his garden, and he belonged to many gardening societies, including the Hemerocallis Society (daylilies). He also loved to travel with his wife and listening to music, including the waltzes of Johann Strauss (with whom he enjoyed sharing a surname) and New Orleans jazz. As a first-generation American who worked his way out of poverty after his father died when he was seven years old, Dr. Strauss felt strongly about empowering others through education and facilitating health advancements. As a result, he endowed two professorships at his alma mater, Wayne State University, to facilitate research into engineering and computer applications that improve medical care. Dr. Strauss is survived by his wife of 55 years, Anita Strauss of La Jolla, his four adult children who live in San Diego: Brian Strauss, Kathleen Strauss (Scott Hawes), Diana Strauss Casey (Kevin Casey) and Randy Strauss (Paige Seeger Strauss), seven beautiful grandchildren (Julia, Ashley, Isabella, Courtney, Eliza, John and Hannah), and his nieces Sasha Kaufman and Beatrice Kaufman of Seattle, Washington and nephew Jim Kaufman of Cambridge, U.K. He was predeceased by his sister, Hildegard Kaufman. A memorial service will be held for Dr. Strauss on November 18 at 3 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego, located at 4190 Front Street in Hillcrest.

Dr Strauss was my doctor. I still think of him and miss him terribly. It's been years and I still am not able to replace him. He was very professional and knew his patients well. There is no replacement for him! My condolences to his wife and family as well as the patients who likely miss him still. Until we meet again Dr... you are truly missed.

Paul Strauss was one of the most learned and intelligent man I have ever known. Both qualities led to his amazing military career in Vietnam and later as a respected and brilliant scholar and professor. He was also a wonderful friend, thoughtful, kind, and generous. Above all, he was a man of faith and virtue. I shall miss his humor, his wide—ranging allusions to literature, his profound religious knowledge and practice, and his unfailing sympathy and tolerance,

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Strauss. He was my son's psychiatrist for almost 20 years. During that time he had shown compassion and dedication to my son's well being. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Strauss' family. May he rest in peace.

Dr. Strauss brought me from a hallucinating schizophrenic with a learning disability and could not speak a coherent sentence or look a person in the face when they spoke to me to a college graduate with an AA degree in English. He taught me the importance of staying active, that is, not just sitting home all day doing nothing. I got a part-time job as a Customer Service Representative, which forced me to interact with people, something I was terrified of doing but came highly recommended by Dr. Strauss, and it worked. The more I had real conversations with real people about real issues the less the hallucinations had control of my life. It took me seven years to realize I had to keep taking the medication he prescribed and going to the therapy sessions to keep feeling better and Dr. Strauss patiently waited through all that time and talking for me to realize that. I could walk in his office and on the first hello Dr. Strauss could tell if I was having a problem with something, and he is always right on the nose. I am having some problems losing Dr. Strauss but thanks to all that he taught me about recognizing the problem, working through it and getting help if it was more than I could handle, I can in good faith say he helped me more than a doctor's duty. I don't have very much audio hallucinations and close to no visual hallucinations because of the medicine Dr. Strauss prescribed. Schizophrenia is a permanent disorder but thanks to Dr. Strauss it is under control. The Lord needed an angel in heaven to help with all the troubled people in the world and he picked Dr. Strauss, the Lord has the best of best for his angels and that's why I know Dr. Strauss is by his side at the call for duty ready and willing to give a helping hand, bless his heart.
I hope Dr. Strauss's family will find comfort in the wonderful memories of him and I pray the Lord keep you always.

Dr. Paul Strauss thank you for your beautiful, caring, and concerned spirit. You always presented yourself with kindness and you helped me feel valued and respected as a nurse working with your patients. You will be greatly missed and be forever remembered and honored for your dedication. I will be working this Saturday at the place you devoted your strengths and talents to for many years. I am saddened by your loss and I will always remember you dear doctor.

I am saddened to hear of Paul's passing. Paul and Anita were our neighbors in Pacifica and their son Brian and my brother Brian were close friends. Anita was also my mom's, Dorothy Lloyd, best friend and in later years before mom's passing Anita and my mom went to breakfast on a regular basis.

I'm sorry I won't be able to attend the funeral this Saturday, but please know I will have your family in my thoughts during this tough time.

Anita, I would love to visit with you sometime, I'm still living in Santee, and hope you will contact me at [email protected]

Take care

I remember Dr. Strauss for his love of life, love of family and love of people. His mission in life was to help thousands lead a happier and more purposeful future. He touched the lives of many, many people and he will be missed greatly. Perhaps his greatest asset was his humbleness.

His legacy will undoubtedly flourish through his family, friends and clients for many many years!

Thank you Dr. Paul.
