I attended Hilltop High School with Phil Groves. He wasin the marching band, he was on the wrestling team, and he sang in the choir. I remembered he brought his guitar and banjo to our English class and sang some folk songs: "They Call The Wind Mariah" and then on the banjo he sang "John Henry". Even back in high school, Phil knew he was going to become a doctor.

I was his roommate when he was an undergraduate at UCLA. Lost touch when he graduated. My memories of him were as a handsome young man who played guitar and piano and drove an Austin Healy. I was 2 years younger, looked up to him and despaired of ever being as 'cool' as he was.

I just found out that Phil died. I know that he had MS for quite some time. When I was a graduate student at Colorado, he encouraged me when I was working for a very difficult advisor. He was a smart, sweet man and I credit him for helping me to the finish line in those years. My condolences to his family.

Phillip & I were best friends when I was 5 & he was 6. We had many adventures - discovering treasures while trash picking, building a fort with a sliding door, picking fruit from our backyards & selling it to neighbors. Phillip gave me a friendship ring he bought on time - 50 cents a week for 3 weeks. He was kind, fun, generous, inventive and brilliant. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Grove family. Margo Kasch

My wonderful Dad, Philip M. Groves, got a promotion on June 20. He was an amazing father who gave to his family generously. He is respected and admired by so many people. He left an indelible mark on me and I always have loved him so much. He was a talented professor, scientist, and remarkable man. I am filled with love for him and cherish every memory I have. I do miss him. I used to sit at the side of his bed and chat about life and work and loved to make him laugh. We have always had a special connection. He passed peacefully and was stoic, funny, sweet, and enlightened until the very end of his life here. I trust that he is still with me and that the timeless, universal spirit which connects us all continues to work through him and all of us propelling us to our greatest good. I am filled with love and always grateful to have him as my dad.
