Ralph Callaway Obituary

Ralph Callaway, a force of nature, passed away on October 5, 2023, after a brief illness.Born August 13, 1942, in Chester, PA, he joined the Navy in 1964 as a Seaman Recruit, retiring in 1995 at the rank of Commander. While initially joining to avoid the draft, he embodied the slogan "Join the Navy and see the world," with duty stations and ports of call that spanned the globe. Throughout his career and retirement, Ralph mentored countless sailors and others, and was a presence in the lives of everyone he met. For those who were blessed with his friendship, their lives were made even better for being his friend.Following his Navy career Ralph joined SAIC and served as Executive Assistant, to SAIC founder Dr. J. Robert Beyster for 20 years. He was indispensable to Dr. Beyster during his time at SAIC and during Dr. Beyster's retirement.Ralph's final "career" was as Office Manager (and Chief Happiness Officer) at Multifamily Utility Company where he mentored numerous employees.Gifted with quick-witted and at times cheeky humor, Ralph loved making people laugh. An excellent chef, he also delighted in cooking for family and friends. He was an occasional coin and clown (human and inanimate) collector, theatre devotee, and avid cruiser, who enjoyed betting on sports, and believed his birthday should have been a national holiday. He was known for his kind and exceedingly generous nature. Affectionately known as "CC" (Commander Callaway) to some and as Papa Bear or Pops to others, Ralph's positive and wise guidance, advice, mentorship, and influence were felt by many. Those who were privileged to know Ralph, to share in his life and to truly know the beautiful soul he revealed himself to be have been richly blessed.Ralph cherished and adored his wife of almost fifty years, Holly, who survives him. He also leaves brothers- and sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

In Memoriam:

"While there is no escaping death, may we all have done as much with our days as our good friend."

"Middlemarch" by George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans), on the diffusion of good.

Never under estimate the difference you made and the lives you´ve touched.

-----

What I found most remarkable about Ralph Callaway was his affirming encouragement of others to always seek greater responsibility in both their professional and personal lives. And for those already in positions of authority to remain true themselves. Ralph knew that for most people hard work was the means for a meaningful and accomplished life. I saw so many times how those he mentored went on to succeed in their careers. I recall, too, how Ralph cared for Holly´s grandmother in the last years of her life and how he sought out and reunited with distant relatives. We can all learn from how Ralph led his life
