Rebecca Hughes Obituary

Rebecca A. "Becky" Hughes

September 22, 1955 - December 17, 2018

BRITT, IOWA - Rebecca A. "Becky" Hughes, 63 of Britt, passed away Monday, December 17, 2018 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, under the care of Hospice of North Iowa.

Memorial graveside services for Rebecca Hughes will be held at 1:30 PM on Monday, April 29, 2019 at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Rebecca, the daughter of Thomas "Tom" and Rose (Wellik) Hughes was born on September 22, 1955 in Britt. She was the first born grandchild of Leo and Winnie Hughes and the 13th grandchild of Frank G. and Lillian Wellik and the 1st grandchild to pass away from both families.

Rebecca was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt.

Rebecca was raised in Britt and graduated from Britt High School in 1973. Rebecca's first job was delivering daily newspapers on her turquoise Schwinn bicycle.

While in high school, Rebecca was one of the original members and Captain for Coach Bill Hudson's 1972-1973 Eaglettes Basketball Team where she got her nickname, "Fred", an honor she was proud of her entire life. Another high school achievement of Fred's was winning the Badminton Championship with her friend Wendy (Ruter) Grove. While in high school, she was active in a number of activities, including various offices including President of the Girls Recreation Association (GRA) under the direction of her mentor, Linda Sanger.

Following high school, Rebecca attended Ellsworth Community College before returning to Britt. She worked at Britt Tech, E.F. Johnson's and Casey's General Store. From 1979 to 1985, she was a volunteer for West Hancock Ambulance Service. She enjoyed her summers playing league softball and her winters bowling.

She relocated to Mount Pleasant, Iowa where she worked at the Walmart Distribution Center for many years.

In the late 1990's, she moved to Connecticut to further her education as an Emergency Medical Technician – Basic, working for American Medical Response until she could no longer work because of her health. She received special recognition for her outstanding professionalism and compassion from Governor Rell of Connecticut.

In July of 2018, she returned to Britt to be close to family. She enjoyed attending her nieces and nephews sporting events and activities. She loved watching the Minnesota Vikings and cooking shows, even though she couldn't cook!

She will be remembered for her love of family and friends, never met a stranger, her compassion for others and marching to the beat of her own drum. Her family will miss the singing Happy Birthday messages and receiving those crazy Hallmark Christmas cards.

Rebecca is survived by her siblings Mary Jo Hughes of Britt, Linda Hughes of Britt, Todd (Jennifer) Hughes and Bailey, Lucy, Ella and Thomas of Thompson, Jeff (Cathy) Hughes and Samuel of Forest City, Karri (Cord) Stenberg and Madison of Thompson, and Jason Legler of Thompson; also surviving aunts and uncles Michelle (Robert) Horstman, Kate (Paul) Smith, Joe Davison, Arlene Wellik, Marcella Doughan, many cousins and friends including close friend Dee (Willrett) Betcher and her beloved cat, Sophia.

Rebecca was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles Mary (Clifton) Lewerenz, Godmother Colleen Davison, Evelyn (Lloyd) Holck (Godfather), Paul Wellik, Marie (John) Loebig, Dale Doughan and good friend, Jennie Violette.
