In retirement, he volunteered actively with various organizations including the Audubon Society, and most notably with the Carlsbad Police Department, which he served as the department armorer for approximately a decade, attending the armorer's schools sponsored by Beretta and Remington. He leaves his wife Marjorie of Carlsbad, his sons Steve of Alpine, Texas and Jim of Eugene, Oregon, and four grandchildren. A funeral service for Lt. Col. Chaney, followed by interment of his ashes with military honors, will be held on Wednesday, April 13th, at 3:00 p.m. at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Pt. Loma, CA. Dear Mrs. Chaney, Steve and Jim;

I was sadden to read of the recent passing of your husband/father, but glad that he was surrounded by a loving family in his last hours. It doesn't sound like much to ask for, but it doesn't happen as consistently as it should.

Thanks for the inclusive obit. It reminded me of how instantly I liked him. He was indeed a fine man.

Sincerely,

Catherine M. (Scanlon) Cowles

Dad, in 1986 in the Soviet Union.
