When I was a young teen in the 80s I took three trips on the Royal Polaris, Steve would let me sit in the wheelhouse and watch the operation on the boat. It's those memories that caused me to search for him tonight. So sad to hear he passed.

I met Steve in the early 60s in Newport Beach and had a wonderful friendship with him. I have the fondest memories of him. We touched base again about 15 years ago and reminisced. I will never forget him.

I just saw this and wanted to send my condolences from my late husband John Rowe, who also worked for Frank LoPreste. John spoke fondly of Steve often. I´m so sorry for your loss.

Dear Thea and Brooke,
We read, with sadness, the obituary for Steve. Jay and I, and our son, Jason, all liked and admired Steve and we thought that calling him "legendary" was a most fitting description. His expertise and knowledge on the Royal Polaris was beyond comparison. Jason really enjoyed working with him on the boat.
I´m sure that it is very difficult for you, Thea, and your children to have to say goodbye to your husband and father. For you, Brooke, your brother has always been a part of your life throughout your childhood, as well as all of your adult years.
Please know that you are all in our thoughts, especially in the coming days, weeks, and months as you process this new reality.
With love,
Diane Sweeney

I met Steve in the fourth grade at La Jolla Elementary. I had an interest in fishing, and realizing that Steve had more of an interest in fishing than I did, I attached myself to him immediately. I also became aware that he was quite knowledgeable about how to fish off the beach even at the age of nine. He was with me when I caught my first two pound Opaleye just off the north end of Windansea Beach where he and his family only lived a block away. I could go on and on with many stories about our youth like keeping lobster bait on the top of his garage and setting traps at low tide in the tide pools. When Seaforth sport fishing first opened in 1960, he got his first job as a deckhand on the first Seaforth boat, working under Cliff Cheney as Skipper. He got me a job as the second deckhand at the same time. We were both too young to drive so we would take the bus down to Seaforth. We would bring fish back in gunny sacks on the bus and we´revery unpopular with the driver. We were friends all the way through high school. I still tell people he was the best fisherman I have ever known. I would love to attend the memorial.
