Steven Billings Obituary

Steven Robert Billings (SRB) passed away peacefully in his home. He is survived by his son, daughter, granddaughter, two sisters and many nieces and nephews. He was a superb athlete and a hard-working, determined businessman. His joys were spending time with his granddaughter, golfing with friends, helping people, doting on his and others' dogs and running his successful business.

Steve was born in San Diego and lived almost his entire life in North Park. In middle school, he won an award for being the third fastest in the nation in the 50-yard dash. He attended San Diego High School and lettered in multiple sports – football, basketball, and baseball. He was a sought-after football recruit entering his senior year, but severely broke his ankle. He attended San Diego State where he studied business and economics.

After school, Steve spent time in the beverage distribution business working for Mesa Distributing, where he quickly rose. He took the skills he learned and set off as an entrepreneur. In the early 1980s, he purchased and ran the Beachcomber in South Mission Beach. His success running the well-known bar allowed him to purchase and run other bars in San Diego, including the Open Bar in Pacific Beach.

In the last decade, he kept himself busy running the Open Bar. In recent years, he focused more on his passion for golf. He often golfed four to five times a week at the Balboa Park Golf Course, walking the course to stay healthy. You could often see him on the course putting with one hand with his bag over his shoulder.

Those who were fortunate enough to have Steve in their lives will deeply miss his influence and generosity.

Just saw this. Very sorry to see this. Steve and I were friends at Jefferson Elementary School in North Park but lost tough with each other. I saw him last at Helix High School, after my family moved to La Mesa. Wonderful athlete, wonderful friend. I real shock that the died so soon.

I feel like I have lost a big part of my history. Steve and I were the same age, and our parents were great friends from junior high school on. It was such a delight to reconnect when I moved to South Mission and he subsequently became an owner of the Beachcomber. Always a joy to see him, always a joy to speak with him. A special man who will be missed by many. My sincere condolences to all his family.

Steve was such a kind and generous person. I cannot count how many people I know who he helped. Anyone who needed a hand up found their hand in his. When I got married he hired a harpist who played "Love Songs for My Chuckie" He donated all of the beverages for our wedding. I can never thank him enough for all of the kindnesses he performed over the years. Mission Beach will never forget Steve.

40 years of some of the best times in my life are due to Steve and his Open Bar crew. Such a polite man, a true local! it truly saddens me to find out, you will sorely be missed Steve. Thanks again for all the great times, live bands, 6 pool tables, early morn chitchats in Ralph's, etc. God Bless, please, please watch over us and say hello to the other Angels. LauraOpenBar

I met Steve in 1960 when our father´s began working at Kraft Foods together. Our families became close friends. We enjoyed storied camping trips to Mexico and Pismo Beach. I´m a few years older than Steve. I use to drive him to his Junior Olympic Track Meets at Balboa Stadium. Unfortunately, in more ways than one, I was away in the US Army and Vietnam when Steve became a prolific athlete at San Diego High School. We reconnected in our adult lives as we were both involved in the restaurant and bar industry. While he put on a hard persona, he was was actually a very generous and caring man. Steve helped many people turn their lives around over the years. Steve will be missed by many.
