Susan Porter Obituary

PORTER, SUSAN J. Susan passed away peacefully at 6 p.m. on March 27, 2004 after an extensive stay at Kaiser Hospital in San Diego. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, graduated from high school in Northern Indiana, and later graduated from business college in Washington, DC. She had an opportunity to join the FBI, but instead chose a job with a brilliant man who had been the Dean of the Notre Dame law school. She later married Larry Porter and they were married for over 41 years. After working as a legal secretary for a number of years she got a job in La Mesa as the Deputy City Clerk. She is survived by her husband Larry; her brother Paul Short of Lexington, Ky; her sister Shirley Tremayne of Beaverton, Oregon; brother, Tom Peters of Chicago, and sister Margie Cannella of Huston, Texas. She was especially loved by her niece Pam Latham and Angela Atokely. She will be missed by Caroline Fredholm of Kalmar, Sweden, and Kristen and Leslie LaBonte of San Diego who were like daughters to her. A private memorial service will be held for her family and close friends on a date to be determined. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com

Larry Porter

May 2, 2004

Susie was the love of my life for 41 years. She sat next to me in high school so we were friends before we fell in love. She traveled with me to the Orient and to Europe several times and made friends wherever she went. She was a beautiful fun and upbeat person to be with and life without her will never be the same.

Larry, there are so many good memories of Sue; the first time we met when you were still in the Navy; your trip to Texas to visit us; the time Helen, Ruth and I flew from Sacramento to visit you and Sue took us to the San Diego Zoo: all happy and wonderful memories. We know you will miss her greatly and pray our Lord will be with you and give you strength.

Dear Larry,

We will always cherish the fun times we spent with the two of you and your special restaurants. You took us to some of the best places in town. We enjoyed swapping stories of family - be they two or four legged - with you. Suzie had a funny way of looking at things that could always get us smiling. There was always a great joke to share to set the mood for relaxed fun. We'll miss Suzie and we know you are missing her very much, but I feel honored to have had the opportuntity to have met her. I know she is looking over you, making sure you don't throw away anything important!

We did not have the opportunity to be with Susan as much as we would like. We will always remember the time the two of you spent the night with us in Houston, TX. You were driving your new green porsche. We gave you some good ideas to look for antiques which Sue loved. We know you will miss her very much but you have many good memories. We are lifting you up in prayer. May our Lord surround you with HIS comforting arms. We love you.

Dear Larry, I think you know how we felt about Sue. Words cannot express how we feel about Sue's passing. We have so many good memories of the times we spent with Sue and you when we visited California. You don't know the number of times we talk about a favorite place the two of you took us to eat, comparing notes about our beagles, talking antiques and sharing jokes. We always enjoyed Sue's company. Even though it has been quite a few years since we had seen Sue, sometims it just seemed like yesterday. Our thoughts are with you. Love, Richard and Margo

I have been friends with Sue and Larry for almost 35 years, but I have always known better than to tell them they were my “oldest” friends, instead saying with a grin that they were the “friends I have known the longest”. We have shared some crazy memories—driving up to a restaurant in L.A. just for the beef stroganoff and having their VW van break down in the parking lot, only to have it start beautifully as soon as the mechanic showed up; visiting Disneyland during one of So Cal’s worst rainstorms—the sleeves on Suzie’s raincoat shrank so much that her lower arms were exposed—raincoats are not supposed to shrink!; the time I took Suzie to the Humane Society “just to look” and she fell in love with the beagle there—and ultimately adopted her. Speaking of beagles, I still remember Suzie telling me, years ago, that she would NEVER have a dog, because they were dirty and full of fleas—and then suddenly she and Larry returned from a road trip with the first of their beloved beagles. Laughing and reminiscing over our escapades was almost as much fun as living them—and I will forever miss Sue’s friendship, her spicy wit and humor, and the way she made me laugh, whether with a joke or an observation or just by the way she would give Larry “the look” when he was up to some mischief (which was most of the time). I’ll miss you, Suzie--don’t give the angels in heaven too hard a time!

During my stay as a foregin exchange student in Chula Vista I found a second american home at Ferguson Way. Sue always making sure that we had a good and enjoyable time together with everything from bowling to Cribbage. The highlight was our great vacation trip around California, a trip I will never forget.

I surely will miss Sue when I eventually visit San Diego again.

My condolences to Larry and Sue's family.

Larry, even though I did not see Sue in the past several years, we always kept in close touch with each other. And I have been in the family for 47 years. I have good memories of her living with us in D.C. and going to school. Also good memories of the times you and Sue came to visit us. Just knowing that I cannot talk to her again is sad. Keep in touch with us.

Our acquaintance with Sue was of short duration but in that short time we enjoyed her stories of her youth and her early life with Larry which she told with such humor and wit. She will certainly be missed.

I will miss Suzie so much. I will always smile at our breakfast meetings listening to Larry and Suzie tell me such wonderful stories of their beautiful life together. They are an inspiration to me and her passing leaves a deep sorrow in my heart. Larry, you have been so blessed to have had such a beautiful companion for your precious years together. You are always in my prayers.

Sue will be missed by her family and friends. She was my best friend's sister. I remember having lunch with her when we visited San Diego in 1996. We stayed at the resturant for 3 1/2 hours telling stories and remembering the times when they lived near Knootz Lake, Indiana. Larry, we are thinking of you at this time. She is no longer suffering, she is at peace.

Sue will be missed very much at all the glass shows. She was always ready and willing to help either the customer or any of the dealers. Her vast knowledge of the elegant glass she sold was respected by all. Her sense of humor will be missed by so many of us dealers. Sue, we could always count on you for a joke or a good story about your dogs. Larry, our hearts go out to you. I'm sure that Sue will be looking after you even if you can't see her.
