Suzanne Geller Obituary

Geller, Suzanne 12/13/1927 ~ 08/04/2014 LA JOLLA -- Suzanne Geller, 86, prolific watercolor artist and animal activist, lived in the San Diego area since 1970, with her late husband Dr. Jack Geller. A student of Charles Reid, her award-winning work was shown at many galleries and art shows regionally and nationally, and she was a watercolor instructor at the Del Mar Fair for many years. In 1974, along with Peggy Howell, she co-founded the non-profit F.O.C.A.S. (Friends of County Animal Shelters) which found homes for unwanted pets found in San Diego Animal Shelters. She owned and rescued many dogs and cats throughout the years, 3 of whom (Misty, Pistolo and Snookums) still live at her house. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Jack, her daughter Jamie and her sister Dorothy Rostov. She is survived by her daughter Jacqueline (Mark) Newman of La Jolla, Jon (Jean) Geller of Fort Collins, Colorado, sister Greta Rosen of Weston, Mass., and 4 grandchildren, Joshua, Jamee, Josey and Alexandra. Friends and relatives will celebrate Suzanne's life at her residence, 2488 Hidden Valley Road, La Jolla, at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 13. Please RSVP to [email protected] or 858-454-8600. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the F.O.C.A.S. Program at Rancho Coastal Humane Society at rchumanesociety.org, or the Ladybug Fund at Theladybugfund.org.

What a sad day when we lost our magical water colorist, our dog lady, our smiling, quirky, friendly Sue Geller.
I, myself, miss her already, as she was always brimming with interesting news and opinions. Never again. Inevitably life changes, but for us left behind, who knew and treasured her, life is less sparkly, less fun without the chance of running into Sue somewhere on the streets of La Jolla. Adieu dear friend.`

Sue was a great friend of the seals at Casa Beach and attended many meetings, including the City Council meeting 2/24/14 where the Council voted to close the beach during pupping season 12/15-5/15. I looked for her yesterday at the California Coastal Commission meeting and did not see her! Then I saw the obituary today in the paper, and was saddened by the loss of a great animal activist and fine lady. I am sorry she did not live to see the final win for the seals yesterday, but heartened by her memory. Jane Reldan, MD Treasurer of the Seal Conservancy of San Diego

We spent countless hours on the tennis court together and more recently were reconnected on the La Jolla Shores Association board. Sue's community interest and efforts will be missed.

I met Sue three days after arriving in San Diego in 1980. She has been a friend and an influence in my life since. I have many wonderful memories of playing tennis then golf with Sue and Jack, enjoying meals together and great conversations. She was a force in San Diego and her work on behalf of animals lives on.

I have many fond memories of working with her and her husband during a most productive 14+ years in Mercy Hospital's Research Laboratories. They were kind and most pleasant to work with.
