Suzanne McGrath Obituary

Suzanne McGrath July 16, 1943 - February 7, 2016 SAN DIEGO Our beloved Suzanne lost her 2 1/2 year battle with cancer on February 7, 2016. Sue was born in Los Angeles, California as the oldest of three children of Don and Kathryn Vivrette. She was raised in Manhattan Beach and Fullerton, graduating from Fullerton Union High School. Four years later, she earned a degree from UC Berkeley and immediately embarked on a trip around the world. Travel remained a life-long passion as did her love of skiing. On a fateful day in July 1971, she attended a happy hour at Isidore's in Newport Beach. There she met her husband John. They were married later that year in a union that lasted over 44 years. They were long-time residents of Mission Hills, where they purchased their home in 1975. She had a career of over 30 years as a public school teacher with the majority of that time spent in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. During this time, she influenced countless students and fellow teachers. During her summers, she served as a math consultant to teachers by working for the Marilyn Burns Organization. She enjoyed a wide circle of friends and neighbors who played bridge, travelled and raised children together. Sue is survived by her husband, John; sister, Nancy; brother, Donald; daughters, Shannon and Erin; son-in-law, Jeffrey; and two grandchildren. Our family wishes to thank Dr. Lyudmila Bazhenova and her staff at Moores Cancer Center for their professional and compassionate care, and the medical staff at Thornton Hospital for making her final days pain and stress free. A celebration of her remarkable life will be held on Saturday, February 13 at 1:30PM at Tom Ham's Lighthouse, 2150 Harbor Island Drive, San Diego, CA. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to Special Delivery, 4021 Goldfinch St., San Diego, CA 92103, where she volunteered delivering food to people living with HIV/AIDS for many years.

The Azalea hasn't bloomed. Was when I got it. It's supposed to be white. Still think of you often. Remember when Gail and I visited you at Disneyland when you worked there? Probably in 1962 or 1963, summer?

Suzanne was the smartest woman I ever met. I went to Davis with her in 1961-1963. We had such fun together, playing tricks in the dorm. We drove up and down California together commuting to So Cal to Davis and back. Going to the drive in movies in our PJs when we were 20 years old. My dad loved her. I loved her. I only just found out she had passed away. I will tell the rest of the Davis people; I don't know if they knew. She is at the top of my list for the best people I've ever known. Compassionate, fun, loving, understanding. She was just like her mother. Whenever I hear the 60's song "Runaround Sue" I think of her, not because she ran around, but because of her name. Also loved her name Suzanne Vivrette. yOUR FRIEND FOREVER, DIANE.

Had the fortunate pleasure of having Mrs. McGrath as my elementary school teacher. She had a huge part in my life, providing me the foundation to mathematics that eventually led me into Engineering. She always pushed me to be the best athlete I could be and for that I am ever grateful. In my thoughts. Rest in paradise!

Mrs. McGrath was my 5th and 6th grade teacher at Eastlake Elementary. She was an energetic, warm, and fun-loving person who always made learning enjoyable. She had a passion for math and science, which rubbed off on me. Without her positive influence, I'm not sure that I'd be in the field of engineering today. She definitely made a huge impact on those she taught. We will miss you very much Suzanne!

Our deepest condolences to her family.

Mrs. McGrath was my 5th grade teacher and will forever hold a dear place in my heart. Her love of teaching was one of the reasons I went into the profession. Heaven has gained an amazing angel.
