I met Vern in 1976 at the branch he was managing on 5th Ave in San Diego. I was visiting from Australia and went in to deposit a foreign currency check. Vern came out of his office and the teller who was confused waved him over. Vern explained how to process the deposit.
That was the beginning of a great friendship. We kept in touch and when I moved back to San Diego in 1983 I took my account to the branch Vern was managing in Lemon Grove. I can remember many enjoyable business lunches as well dinners with Del Rey.
Vern was one of the bankers in my life who went out of his way to help me. You can count them on one hand with fingers missing. I was grateful then and still am.
I moved back to New Zealand in 1994. We kept in touch with Christmas cards, phone calls and visits to Verns house in Poway when I travelled back to the US for visits.
Vern was one of those rare people you were fortunate to have crossed paths with in life.

We were so sorry to hear about your Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa's passing.
I hope his loving personality and caring spirit has been passed on to his family.
We met Vern and Del Ray in the 80's through Ernie's Poway Business. We shared many fun times together over the years. Vern was an amazing cheer leader and was always encouraging and connecting people with people. Truly a big loss..We will always have wonderful memories of both Vern and Del Rey

Vern was a great neighbor. We lived a couple houses away for close to 30 years. He always gave my kids chocolate around the holidays which they loved. He was always friendly and neighborly. I didn´t realize how accomplished he was until I read his well written obituary. Well done, Vern!

Enjoyed working with Vern at various Chamber events including the Mixers, Street Fairs, & the Poway Days Parade all of which were Chamber sponsored. I also knew Vern when he was the Branch Manager of Union Bank. He was always friendly and jovial... a first rate Ambassador for the Poway Chamber of Commerce.

My sincerest condolences to Vern´s family.
Vern was very welcoming to me when I moved from South Africa to the USA and opened the iLoveKickboxing studio in Poway. He would often drop by the studio to simply say hello and check in on me and the studio.
He was a staunch supporter of Poway business and just a great person.
Vern you will be sorely missed, but Rest In Peace knowing you have left this world a better place

I served on the Poway Chamber with Vern when I was a Realtor. I helped with many Chamber functions (guess I was ON the Chamber!). It was always a pleasure to be working with Vern & the others! He was a hard-working & gracious gentleman!
