Bruce McLennan Obituary

Bruce Eells McLennan Bruce Eells McLennan passed away peacefully at his home in Grover Beach on July 10, 2017. He was born in Shelton, Washington in 1942, but spent most of his life, from the age of four, in San Luis Obispo County. He loved the Central Coast and often reminded his children how lucky they were to live "in God's country." His favorite expression, one he said often was, "We have a lot to be thankful for." Bruce graduated from San Luis Obispo High School in 1960, then moved to Southern California to attend Ventura College. He completed his education at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He met the love of his life, Judy, at Grace Church in San Luis Obispo in 1960 and they were married in Las Vegas, Nevada four years later. Bruce worked for the State of California for 25 years; most of that time was spent at the California Men's Colony, where he was affectionately known as "Big Mac." When his children were young, he spent his time taking them on adventures and cross-country road trips, where he stopped anywhere that looked fun. He also liked to body-surf, do macrame and make stained- glass windows. He never missed one of his children's basketball games or school programs. When Bruce retired in 1992, he spent the next several years fulfilling his lifelong dream of riding his bicycle down the West Coast of the United States. He spent three months travelling from Seattle to Arroyo Grande. He had so much fun that he next took the train across Canada then rode his bike from Maine to New York. He spent the rest of his retirement 'tinkering' around the house, taking care of his parents and spending time with his five beloved grandchildren. Bruce liked making people laugh and people loved to be around him. He was a jovial character, with shining blue eyes, a bushy beard, and a belly so jolly that he was 'Santa Claus' at The Manse every Christmas while his mother lived there. He was housebound for the last two years of his life, but still made a point of being kind to people, whether by giving them a box of See's candy, a thoughtful note, or a friendly wave from the window. Burce was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judy; and his parents, Elmer and Florence. He will be missed by his children: Brennan and Kimberly (Daniel) Wickstrom; his grandchildren: Katie and Miles McLennan, and Lucy, Daisy and Lizzie Wickstrom; his sister, Margaret (Cordell) Leih; his brother, Bill (Jenann) McLennan; his sister-in-law, Joan (Bob) Holladay; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please give your loved ones a lot of hugs, especially those you might not like much at the moment. Life is short, and we really do have a lot for which to be thankful. Bruce was a great guy; I knew him in Avenal where he used our Real Estate office. All these years later I still have a very kind thank you note from him. As others have said he was a kind and fun guy.
My thoughts go out to his family.

Rest in Peace Bruce. I have fun memories of you and Melvin Neal playing on the playground and in class at Fremont school when we were still children. I shared all those years of elementary school through High School graduation with you and I think we were blessed with an almost perfect youth environment here on the wonderful central coast. I read your obituary and can tell that you continued to be a loving and kind human being. I know you are being rewarded and also are in the arms of your beloved. Thank you for the memories and comradeship. Pat (Barret) Sackrider

Bill, I was so sorry to read about your brothers passing. Bruce was quite a bit older than me, but I have many fond memories of all the good times we shared on Grove Street. He sounds like a wonderful man and father. My thoughts are with you at this very difficult time.

Mac was one of the people who trained me when I started in the Department. He told me many great stories and he was a wonderful person. I really enjoyed knowing him; he will obviously be missed by all who knew him.

I was fortunate to be "Big Mac" Supervisor at ASP. Mac, was a bright, kind, fair individual.I will always remember Mac with his shirt hang out and smoking a cigar, his desk was always in a disarray, but he could locate anything when requested. Surprisingly, the place he rented in Avenal was so meticulous. Just as everyone has mentioned, Mac always brought out a smile in you. R.I.P Brother and share your humor with everyone in heaven!!!

I knew Bruce when I was a Correctional Officer at CMC and enjoyed working with him. I hope it comforts his family to know he's a young 33 in heaven. The Bible said we'll be like Jesus when we see him, and Jesus went back to heaven when he was 33.

Bruce and I were life long friends, and our sons, Vern and Brennan are friends. I loved being around him, even if not much in these latter years. His smile and great laugh will be sorely missed . My condolences to Margaret and Billy, Brennan and Kim, and to all the rest of the family. I know that he is at home with the Lord and his parents, and even dear "Daddy Mac."

With a saddened heart I extend my deepest sympathies to Bruce's loved ones. Bruce and I started working together at CMC, and have many work memories shared with him. I met his young family. I remember how devastated he was when he lost (Judy) the love of his life, yet he had the love and pride of his children to help him carry on. Twas glad to hear he finally made that coastal bike ride he wanted so much to do. He asked me many times to join him, and my response was, 'only if my bike had a throttle and a big engine.' We lost touch when I transferred. Bruce was an enjoyable character to be around, and hopefully remembering sharing those memorable moments with him will bring solace to his loved ones. RIP
